| “ | Right, and are we just stuffing the experiments back where they came from? Acting like all this didn't happen? Wool over the eyes? Because I guarantee it won't be so easy to toss a new coat of paint over sixty visitors dead. Or the dozen Resource Extraction Specialists we've got swimming in the bellies of those things. | ” |
| — Specialist #2, '93 Theater Incident | ||
The Theater Incident was an incident that occurred at Playtime Co.
In 1993, two years prior to The Hour of Joy, a fire along with Playtime's experiments caused havoc in the Theater.
Description of Events[]
Not much is known about this event, except that the Theater was set ablaze[1] and a number of Bigger Bodies became loose. The incident resulted in the deaths of at least 66 visitors. A dozen Specialists were also killed after the event, having been eaten by the experiments, with Boxy Boo among them.[2]
Aftermath[]
After the Theater was cleaned up and the incident was covered up, it became the final straw for the higher-ups of Playtime Co. They hired investigator Gerad Lockehart to look into the case, and once he confirmed that Harley Sawyer was responsible,[3] most likely due to negligence, the leadership discussed how to deal with him.[4] It was eventually decided by Leith Pierre that Sawyer would become Experiment 1354, in which they removed his brain and several of his organs. These would be placed in several areas throughout the lower levels ensuring that Dr. Sawyer couldn't leave. He would then on be required to perform instructed procedures and provide his knowledge of the process freely to staff, under threat of the power sustaining his life support being shutdown. Playtime Co would also start construction of "The Shelf", a prison complex designed to house and contain experiments and Sawyer.
Trivia[]
- It's quite possible that Playtime Co was presenting one or several of their Bigger Body experiments to the public during this event while keeping the truth of their origins a secret.
- In one of the cinematic screenshots of The Doctor Trailer, there is one image that shows a fire.
- This is further confirmation that he was involved in the incident, possibly just to see how his experiments worked with the public, or a warning to Playtime Co. if no one praised his work or if someone replaced him.
- However, the fire could also be a reference to this incident being the main reason for Harley Sawyer's situation in the trailer.
