The Player is the main protagonist of Poppy Playtime. They are an unnamed ex-employee of Playtime Co., who revisits the abandoned factory a decade later to search for the company's missing staff after receiving an unexpected letter from an unknown person.

Appearance[]

While it's clear The Player is a human, their physical appearance is never seen in-game, and any surfaces that would reflect their appearance instead show their GrabPack and a white orb which is the light coming from their flashlight.[2] The Player is represented in-game by a faceless yellow mannequin with a spherical head, as seen in the GrabPack Training VHS tapes and in-game posters. The Player has not yet talked nor has their name been given yet.

Even when The Player’s GrabPack is pulling a heavy object, they can still move around with ease. During the vent chase in Chapter 1: "A Tight Squeeze", they are shown to be agile in their movements, being able to turn around corners, enter lower parts of the vents, and even run quickly while still holding the GrabPack.

Personality[]

The Player is a determined individual, who revisits the factory where the company’s staff mysteriously disappeared a decade ago and continuing to see their journey through. Their determination appears to stem from atonement or guilt from Playtime Co's crimes. They are very intelligent and opportunistic, as they effectively utilize the environment to their advantage, whether it is for traversal purposes, solving puzzles, or fighting back against monsters. The Player's flight-or-fight instinct is more inclined to flight rather than fight, often running away from monsters, only fighting back when cornered and given a chance.

As seen in the Welcome To Playtime tape, The Player seems to feel guilty over their past actions at the company or they seem to be suffering from survivor's guilt from the mass disappearance of their own co-workers, seemingly being part of the reason why they finally revisit the factory.

History[]

Backstory[]

At some point in time, The Player was hired by Playtime Co. when the company was active. Though the responsibilities and nature of their tenure remains a mystery, it is possible that they were unaware of the Bigger Bodies Initiative and the company’s crimes would be a major source of guilt for them later on.

On August 8, 1995, The Player did not show up for work for reasons (currently) unknown. Following that day, they seemingly did not attempt to search for or contact other employees in the factory (likely not joining Leith Pierre's Specialists). Instead, they moved away from the abandoned factory for a decade.

Chapter 1: "A Tight Squeeze"[]

Is this a joke?

The Player receives an unexpected letter and a VHS tape.

In the year 2005, The Player receives an unexpected letter and a VHS Tape which features a tampered version of the Vintage Poppy Commercial from the mail one day. Despite the unusual and almost child-like misspelling, it states that the missing employees are somewhere in the factory. After reading the letter and watching the VHS tape (where they see the new Poppy Playtime doll in the commercial), The Player finally decides to revisit the factory to search for the company's missing staff, following the instruction to reach the Poppy Flower to do so.

Alright Playtime Co. I'm here. Let's look for the missing employees inside.

The Player returns to the abandoned factory.

After arriving at the abandoned factory, The Player goes in through the unattended doors of The Entrance, with their intrusion detected and logged by Playtime's security system[3]. There, they obtain and insert a Green VHS Tape into a VCR where it plays Leith Pierre’s recording warning any intruders about his security's wilder aspect. After listening to Pierre’s final warning, The Player ignores it and unlocks the Security Room where they discover and obtain an invaluable GrabPack (which only has one hand for now). With this newfound item, they use it to enter the Main Lobby, where they are greeted by a giant statue of Huggy Wuggy, Playtime Co.'s most popular toy. After restoring the power in the Power Room, they find that the statue of Huggy has mysteriously disappeared, leading them to investigate.

After walking through a somewhat unsettling hallway, The Player enters the Storage Room, where they need to find four power cells to activate the crane and collect the GrabPack's second hand. After retrieving it, they enter the conveyor belt that once transferred toy parts to the Make-A-Friend machine and fix the power to enable the conveyor to move. Once they arrive, they restore power to the Machine to make their own Cat-Bee. The Player places their toy in the scanning device to unlock the door. But before they can leave, a monstrous Huggy suddenly emerged, forcing them to flee into the Conveyor Belt System next to the Make-A-Friend machine. However, Huggy follows after them and chases them into and through the vents, trying to catch and kill them.

The Player hears Huggy banging hard

The Player sees Huggy breaking through, shortly before Huggy's fall.

Once The Player leaves the vent and reaches a dead-end, the exit closed behind them and they spot a large crate above them. They pull down the crate to break the bridge, preventing Huggy from reaching them, and causing both of them to fall down onto the catwalks. Though The Player landed safely on a catwalk, Huggy struck the railing and fell into the facility's abyss, slamming into several pipelines, leaving behind dark red blood splatters.

While trying to find an exit on the catwalks, The Player eventually reaches the Poppy Flower from the end of the Vintage Poppy Commercial. Inside, they discover a sparsely furnished shrine decorated with colorful pillows and dimly lit by pink lights. After walking through a hallway, they reach and open the final door, hoping to find any employees in there. Unfortunately, they found no employees, but discover a Poppy Playtime doll from the commercial they saw earlier resting in a glass case. Without a second thought, The Player opens the case door, freeing Poppy which causes the lights to briefly flicker before cutting out, and The Player to lose consciousness. But before drifting off, they hear Poppy acknowledging her release.

Chapter 2: "Fly in a Web"[]

Shorty after waking up and regaining consciousness, The Player discovers that Poppy was missing from her case. However, when trying to exit the Poppy Room, The Player finds it blocked, prompting them to look for another way out. Eventually, they find a white door behind a closet, and when they open it, they discover that the factory is much larger than expected. After traversing through a large hallway, they reach Elliot Ludwig's Office. After going inside, they find Poppy in the Backrooms. Poppy, in response to their rescue, decides to help them escape via the Game Station located deep under the facility. This plan is soon set back, as a spider-like experiment named Mommy Long Legs and snatches Poppy away, forcing The Player to drop down to attempt to save her of their determination. Upon attempting to open the door leading to the Game Station, The Player gets confronted by Mommy, the latter tearing away The Player's Red GrabPack Hand and stating that to escape, they must play three games that become increasingly more difficult.

After creating a Green Hand in the Molding Room, The Player enters the first game, Musical Memory, a "Simon Says"-like game where they must select the correct buttons before a starving Bunzo Bunny reached them. The rounds gradually get faster until Round 5, a nightmare-inducing round where colors are presented at an inhumane speed and rate.[4] This forces The Player to hit the emergency stop button. After Mommy gives them the first Train Code fragment, they briefly enter the Rejected Room before returning to the Game Station.

The second game is Wack-a-Wuggy, a game similar to "Whack-a-Mole", where The Player is required to hit the Mini Huggies with their GrabPack as they rise out of holes in the wall. After receiving the second Train Code fragment from Mommy, they enter the Cart Corridors. Entering the corridors again, The Player come up to a closed gate. In the distance, a pink version of Huggy Wuggy named Kissy Missy appears, walking in a similar manner. Kissy stares at them for a few seconds before glancing at a nearby lever. After a failed attempt, Kissy successfully pulls it down. As the gate slowly rises back up, Kissy turns away and disappears into the darkness. After this encounter, The Player returns to the Game Station with the help of a cart named Barry.

The third and final game is Statues, where The Player must navigate a maze while being pursued by PJ Pug-a-Pillar. However, The Player notices that the game is unwinnable, with the ending blocked by debris, forcing them to escape via alternate means. However, this infuriates Mommy Long Legs, who corners The Player, claiming that they "cheated". She tells them that it's time to play "one last game" with them, calling it "Hide-and-Seek", and begins to count down.

MommyDeath 2

The Player turns on the grinder in order to kill Mommy.

After surviving Mommy's relentless chase, they activate a grinder via a lever nearby, trapping Mommy and killing her. Soon after, a mysterious, claw-like hand belonging to The Prototype appears from the bottom of the partially closed door and drags Mommy's severed torso into the darkness, before the door to the right opens, and The Player is led back into the Game Station. Navigating Bay 09 lets them find a trapped Poppy and free her. The Player then boards the Train and inputs the Train Code correctly, getting the Train to move.

TrainSpazzingPoppyPlaytiemChapter2

The Player in the Train.

However, Poppy, having witnessed The Player's outstanding agility and intelligence, deemed them "too perfect to lose", and changed the train's direction at the last second. Poppy then states she had "so much time to think and reflect", and that together, they could "set things right."

But before she can finish, the sound of an alarm blares, leaving her with only enough time to exclaim "What-?" before the audio cuts off. The Train begins to accelerate at an alarming pace, prompting The Player to attempt to use the emergency stop lever to stop the Train from running out of control. But the Train ultimately derails and crashes (most likely due to the sudden braking), causing them to hit their head in the process upon impact. However, before losing consciousness, they see a sign for Playcare, leaving their fate uncertain.

Chapter 3: "Deep Sleep"[]

After the train crash, The Player is recovered and thrown down a tube by a giant cat-like experiment named CatNap, landing in a Trash Compactor. They quickly escape and make their way through a series of maintenance tunnels, discovering a phone ringing in the distance, despite being unused for a decade. They find themselves communicating with an unknown, but evidently young, figure named Ollie, who promises to guide The Player while explaining the ongoing situation. The Player proceeds to enter Playcare through Elliot's Express, listening to a speech made by Elliot Ludwig that introduces his ideologies and thoughts during the creation of Playcare.

Upon arriving at Playcare, Ollie gives The Player a key to the Gas Production Zone, which was once used to produce a gas called "The Red Smoke". There, they obtain an upgraded version of the GrabPack named the GrabPack 2.0, utilizing their new Purple Hand to traverse rivers of liquefied Red Smoke, but after activating the console, the power goes out. Ollie tasks them to restore power to the Gas Production Zone via the five locations' backup generators, and assigns them to Home Sweet Home first, the abandoned residence for the orphan children.

Upon entering, they find their path blocked by Red Smoke. With no other choice, they enter the hallway, inhaling the sinister gas and falling into a hallucination. As they make their way through a maze of seemingly endless corridors, they come upon audio recordings that claimed an eviscerated child had been found on Elliot Ludwig's estate. One radio, separate from the rest, repeated a peculiar and damning message. While continuing through, The Player comes across several messages carved into the floors and walls: "Guilt Haunts You", "Happy and fun, why was it done?". The Player reaches the end of the corridors, where a room with dirty beds and a VCR player reside.

Welcome Home

The Player sees Nightmare Huggy Wuggy crawling out of the television.

The Player inserts and watch a tape, which plays a welcome to the employees of the Playtime Co. factory, which slowly becomes increasingly disturbing, calling out The Player specifically for returning and mocking them for not being present on August 8th, 1995. The tape ends with a distorted, twisted version of Huggy Wuggy crawling out of the television and eating The Player. They wake up in the real Home Sweet Home, where they obtain a convenient Gas Mask.

After activating Home Sweet Home's generator and leaving, The Player reunites with Kissy Missy and Poppy Playtime, the latter stopping the former from attacking them. While restoring the Sky Dome's backup power, Poppy explains her motives: She intends to kill the Prototype, the leader of the vengeful experiments. She instructs The Player to wait for Ollie's call before departing. Ollie sends them to the School, the only place CatNap avoided. Inside, The Player encounters Miss Delight, who slowly threatens them through the PA system. They successfully activate the backup generator; however, Miss Delight destroys the generator before chasing them through various corridors and classrooms. Upon nearing the School's maintenance exit, Miss Delight makes one final desperate mad dash after The Player, forcing them to pull a nearby lever, crushing the teacher's head under a metal rolling gate and instantly killing her.

At the back of the maintenance exit, The Player obtains the Orange Hand and make their way into the Caverns. There, they observe CatNap worshipping a shrine dedicated to the Prototype, though they strangely evade him undetected, thanks either to their stealth, or CatNap's unawareness. The Player soon enters a restricted area leading to the Playhouse – the most dangerous area of Playcare, according to Ollie. Here, they fend off hordes of light-sensitive Ruined Critters via the Orange Hand.

EcnounterDogDay

The Player encounters DogDay.

On their way out, they discover a cell where they encounter a locked-up DogDay, a dog-like experiment. He explains that the entirety of Playcare was CatNap's playground for destruction, murder, and general acts of violence. DogDay also explains that CatNap worships the Prototype, taking orders from him and killing anyone who didn’t listen to his god. Shortly before his monologue ends, the Ruined Critters infest DogDay, crawling into his body, hijacking it, and chasing The Player through it. They escape the possessed DogDay, last hearing him or the critters screaming, before taking a slide out of the Playhouse.

Ollie then sends The Player to the Counselor's Office as their final objective, where they find and watch a tape of a warning issued to Playtime Co. employees on August 8, 1995, notifying of a hostile force and to evacuate, before corrupting to reveal the sinister message: "Open the doors. The Hour of Joy has begun." The Player briefly returns to the caverns as they make their way through the Counselor's Office. As they enter a Red Smoke-infested area while trying to power the building, The Player is ambushed by CatNap, who knocks the Gas Mask off their face and sends them into a dream-like state. There, Poppy asks The Player rhetorical questions while they have various shadowy visions of children in Playcare appear, with the Huggy statue appearing briefly before a vision of the Prototype reaching through the Huggy statue's ceiling ends the dream. After recovering from the dream and re-routing the Counselor's Office and Sky Dome's backup power to the statue, Ollie gives The Player the final battery required to power the Gas Production Zone.

CatNap Burns

The Player watches CatNap getting burned.

They return to the zone, but are immediately ambushed again by CatNap, who fills the room with Red Smoke and chases The Player into an elevator. They enter the Safe Room and fend off CatNap in his demonic form for three minutes as he constantly toys with them via hallucinations.

A Green GrabPack Hand receiver eventually overcharges and The Player utilizes this to eliminate CatNap, with the hand getting destroyed in the process. CatNap staggers from the lethal electrocution and falls to the ground, inadvertently lighting himself on fire by exhaling the Red Smoke in a last-ditch effort. This causes him to madly writhe and scramble around the room as the flames burn away his fur while The Player watches on. Shortly after, the Prototype's arm emerges from the ceiling, almost to offer assistance to CatNap before brutally taking his life, seemingly for his failures. The Prototype then takes away CatNap, as The Player watches this in the process.

Returning to the Gas Production Zone, The Player uses the battery to power the console, diverting the gas and powering the area. They reunite with Poppy, who shows them a tape containing CCTV footage of what happened to the company’s staff: an incident the toys call The Hour of Joy. The Player watches a security feed of the toys, under the Prototype's orders, indiscriminately killing everyone present in the factory at the time. Poppy explains that she had been thrown into the case The Player found her in at the time, but she had heard everything that happened and had since been distraught by the needless slaughter of so many lives, including those who were innocent, on that day. Therefore, she had vowed to put an end to the Prototype for what he had done.

Poppy and The Player take an elevator that led deeper into the factory, while Kissy Missy stayed behind to activate it. As the elevator lowers into the ground, an unknown entity attacks Kissy, and Poppy and The Player try to make the elevator go up to save her. But the door concealing the elevator closes, stranding them in the deeper levels of the factory and leaving Kissy's fate uncertain.

Chapter 4: "Safe Haven"[]

After being separated from Kissy, Poppy tells The Player to continue on into the Prison area while she returns to recover Kissy. After navigating their way to the entrance of the Prison, they stow aboard an old train and are met by The Doctor, Harley Sawyer, the creator and founder of the Bigger Bodies Initiative. He remarks with some surprise to see a human and informs The Player they cannot hide from him. Soon after leaving the train, The Player is forced to defend themselves from a myriad of Nightmare Critters and Mini Huggies, and after surviving an encounter with the Red Smoke, they encounter a remarkably large and vicious lion-like experiment named Yarnaby, who begins to search for them through the Prison, while they also receive help from an unknown entity. Upon falling into an enclosure, they are almost killed by a dinosaur-like experiment named Pianosaurus but are saved by a passive experiment with dough-like body chemistry, named Doey the Doughman who tears apart and eats the former for sustenance. The Player is then led through a courtyard area, towards Safe Haven, a place where all of the other living toys take refuge there. As Doey goes on ahead, The Player follows until they're pulled into a hole in the wall by Poppy and a badly injured Kissy as the Prototype is both heard and seen walking past.

The three reach Safe Haven where many other toys are gathered for survival. The Player is told by Doey that he is hesitant to agree with Poppy's plan to get revenge on the Prototype instead of letting the surviving toys live and is informed that The Doctor is (for uncertain reasons) in league with the Prototype and has a tool that can save Safe Haven: an Omni Hand. While The Player is traversing through No Man's Land to reach The Doctor’s location, Yarnaby catches up to them and begins to hunt them down through the caverns. Eventually, The Player is able to defeat Yarnaby for good when the latter gets snagged on a hook right above a pit of molten metal, causing him to plummet into the pit and eventually succumb to the intense burns.

Upon reaching the place where The Doctor is residing in, The Doctor taunts The Player and temporarily disables the right hand of their GrabPack while trying to sow seeds of distrust in regard to them following Poppy without question. Eventually, The Player is able to find a heart and a pair of lungs (presumably belonging to The Doctor) and destroys each one. They are then forced to escape from large Bigger Body versions of the Nightmare Critters, and after being thrown by the Doctor down a trapdoor into an area full of his reserve bodies, is able to destroy The Doctor’s consciousness and obtain the Omni Hand. While heading back towards Safe Haven, Ollie is able to make contact with The Player and congratulates them for defeating Sawyer. Shortly after returning to Safe Haven, Ollie calls Poppy and informs them that the Prototype is outside. While Doey goes to distract the Prototype, Poppy instructs The Player to help Ollie fix the generator before sending them down to the Foundation to plant explosive charges. After redirecting the Red Smoke and initiating a countdown, The Player unexpectedly reunites with Doey, who's lost the Prototype in the caves. He realizes in horror, and way too late, that the Prototype was intentionally leading him away from the Safe Haven.

Then they hear and see a distant explosion and Doey runs back to the Haven distraught, followed by The Player. When they return to the Safe Haven, they find it completely destroyed and all of the toys dead. The Prototype had attacked Safe Haven, and Doey breaks down in grief at not being there to protect his friends and family. Slowly, he starts to swing violently back and forth between his personalities as he lashes out at The Player and Poppy, blaming them for the deaths of the survivors. Now enraged and bent on killing The Player, Doey punches a cement beam that held up the Safe Haven, causing rubble to fall onto him and transforms into a large six-limbed monstrosity. The Player is forced to flee into a large central mining area, followed by Doey. There The Player has to kill him by freezing him with liquid nitrogen and tearing him apart with a drill.

The Player falls down into the pit

The Player falls into the pit due to their human weight, as Kissy's arm rips off.

After battling Doey and exiting the mine, The Player slides into a ventilation compartment where both Poppy and Kissy are hiding; all three soon learn that Ollie has actually been the Prototype, and their efforts were sabotaged by him. Poppy flees from both The Player and Kissy, scared of the Prototype's plans; they hear a ticking sound and realize too late that the explosives planted by The Player are now underneath them. The floor explodes, opening a deep hole beneath the two. Kissy grabs onto the edge of the hole and tries to save The Player, however her already weakened arm isn't strong enough to hold their weight and tears off, dropping them down the deep pit.

The Player, separated once again from their allies, slams headfirst into a rock formation and Kissy's torn off arm lands next to them. They eventually get up and continue to stagger forward, entering a building and find themselves inside a long hallway surrounded by poppy flowers. Upon entering a lab room and playing the tape inside, the voice of Leith Pierre mockingly says they are lost and are going to die for trespassing inside the most restricted part of the Factory. As The Player looks back the way they came, they discover a revived Huggy Wuggy charging towards the door and pounding on it, screeching loudly as more Red Smoke begins to fill the room.

Death[]

If The Player dies, one of multiple death screens will appear, followed by a white screen (the ones related to the Prototype end with a red screen), before they respawn at the last autosave checkpoint. The death screens are chosen at random when they die, and are not planned to appear in a certain order. Curiously, dying to the Red Smoke yields no death screens.

Trivia[]

  • In the Ventilation Shaft, when Huggy Wuggy gets too close, the GrabPack shakes, presumably from fear.
  • The unused Chapter 1 synopsis states The Player felt sick and stayed at home as the reason for them missing The Hour of Joy. It is unknown if this is still the case.
  • The coded death screens use the font Bookshelf Symbol 7.
    • ɔ̃ɛ̃X́ŋG̀ ɛ̃ᴜãŋ ǝ̀ããà ᴜãʌ̀ɚ̀. translates to: Stay, they need help.
    • ɛ̃ᴜãŋ 'ɔ̃ã ᴜæɔ̃ɛ̃ ᴜæɚ̀ioŋ. translates to: They're hurt, hungry.
  • It's theorized the person talking to The Player on the death screens is the Prototype, as the words "Get up" are used by the Monster Tutorial Narrator in Project: Playtime, who is believed to be 1006.
  • A theory has circulated that the letters on an unknown fifth tube slide in Higher-Up Tunnels spell a "name" for The Player. The theory is that The Player is the Head of Production, and that they were one of the higher-ups in the factory. Using these letters, a presumed name for The Player is "Jamie B. Honey." (Although the extra 'A' was replaced with an 'E', so it would actually make it "Jamie B. Honay.") Another name that has been speculated is "Jay Bohemian."[5] However, this was later debunked as the Head of Production did not appear in the Orientation Notebook (it should have, were the position to have existed), and in Chapter 4, Harley Sawyer admits to not knowing who The Player was, which he should have if they were a high ranking employee.
    • One of the lines in the Your gift has finally arrived. tape seems to confirm this theory. Said line is: "IT WAS YOUR DOING THAT MADE US."
    • A similar theory is that The Player is the biologist P. W.[6] However, Chapter 4 hints that isn't the case. P.W. is aware of the Hour of Joy, while The Player doesn’t.
    • There is a theory that either Stella Greyber or Leith Pierre is the identity of The Player. This seems very unlikely as Harley Sawyer did not recognize them, and he implies that they were a low-ranking employee beneath notice.
    • Another theory suggests that The Player might be Rich Lovitz. This is in part due to the fact that he openly expresses concern for the children's wellbeing and questions their living situation, and partly because his fate is not made clear. Instead, his experiences within the company are slowly expounded upon throughout each chapter. Additionally, The Player was likely someone high-up within Playtime Co., yet Harley Sawyer did not recognise them, so the two haven't met until Chapter 4. Rich was the Head of Shipping, so he was important in Playtime Co., yet because of that it was likely he did not meet Harley Sawyer, as their jobs had no relation to one another.
    • Though it is most likely that the Fifth Slide Belongs to the Warden not The Player.
  • During the hallucination inside Home Sweet Home, The Player can see an office through a window with the message "Guilt haunts you." above the desk. It's speculated this was The Player's workstation at Playtime Co.
  • The Player was most likely inspired by Henry Stein from the Bendy franchise, as they both are ex-employees of a children's company who receive a letter to return.
  • Dr. Sawyer wonders if The Player had some other ulterior motive for returning rather than because of an unexpected letter, speculating at one point if they had a loved one who was killed in The Hour of Joy, or, as said in Chapter 3: "Deep Sleep", it was because of guilt.
  • The Player's Grabpack arms start to shake during Chapter 4, indicating that the horrors and history of the abandoned Playtime Co. factory has traumatised them.
