Reason: Depictions of multiple people being killed.

I remember hearing every moment of it. It went on so long... So agonizingly long. They tried to hide… to run… anything to stay alive… I remember their cries: "What's going on?"… "Why is this happening?"… "What are those things?" (sniffles) Senseless slaughter, that's all it really was. They killed everyone. The guilty, the innocent, didn't matter. All that death… it didn't fix anything. And then, once it was all over, they dragged those corpses down below where they'd never be found. And they… ate the bodies… to stay alive. The Prototype has to die. For this. For everything.

The Hour of Joy was a major event that occurred at the Playtime Co. factory on August 8, 1995. This incident was a mass rebellion initiated by the experiments, as it set in motion the events before Poppy Playtime and presumably PROJECT: PLAYTIME. The Hour of Joy was planned and orchestrated by The Prototype, who wanted bitter revenge on Playtime Co. It resulted in a vast massacre across the whole factory, targeting both the guilty and the innocent. This incident caused Playtime Co.'s downfall and left the company with no choice but to permanently close down, thus destroying the legacy of Elliot Ludwig.

Description of Events[]

On August 8, 1995, at 10:45 A.M., Kissy Missy was being relocated to Playcare via the train. Fifteen minutes later, exactly at 11:00 a.m., The Prototype and those allied with him, initiated a massive rebellion against their captors and torturers.

In the CCTV tape shown by Poppy, Huggy Wuggy is first seen attacking employees in the Lobby by biting off their heads, and presumably off-screen killing Scientist #4 in the Final Log a short while after, who during the event, decided to make one last recording in which he stated that they mustn't give up their experimentation and that he'll be back with "one breakthrough". In the tape's next scene, Mommy Long Legs is shown ripping a man in half before grabbing several people, lifting them up and then dropping them from a great height at the Game Station, resulting in their deaths. Another employee at an unknown area is seen tripping over and subsequently being swarmed and devoured by a mob of Ruined Critters and Mini Huggies.

The scene cuts to a hallway in the School where Miss Delight and her sisters chase a man into one of the classrooms. Kissy Missy is next seen killing the employees that were transporting her, running after one more in the background. Following this, she went back to her post and stayed in the same position as she was before. Going back to the CCTV tape, Boxy Boo is then shown in a hallway chomping an employee in half, then lunging to another employee off-screen. CatNap is shown in Playcare, seemingly looking for survivors, picking up and knocking an injured employee onto the stairs of the Counselor's Office. Meanwhile, in The Shelf, employees were being attacked and killed by experiments such as Yarnaby and again, Huggy Wuggy. One experiment, who was created using the orphan Riley, was being transported to The Shelf at the time, but her room flipped upside down and she blocked the hole in the room off since she was terrified from all the screaming. The Warden managed to retreat into a room and attempted to escape by making a deal with the Doctor in which he would give the latter his Omni-Hand; however, his fate remains ambiguous.

The final part of the CCTV tape shows various locations from the first three chapters, like Make-A-Friend, the Game Station, Playcare, and the catwalk leading to the Poppy Area, all filled with dead bodies. Although an emergency alert notice was sent out to warn the workforce, nearly everyone within the facility, both the employees that were guilty and the ones who were innocent, were slaughtered by the toys in the factory. Their screams can be heard in five separate instances: the Final Log tape, RESTRICTED_relocation_08-08-1995.mp4, the second nightmare sequence in Chapter 3, the Warden Office 8/8/1995 tape, and the Chapter 4 Console Trailers. In the prison, not all the employees were killed. Some were instead imprisoned and presumably killed later, then eaten. The Player, an unnamed employee, didn’t show up for work in the event. Also, at some point during the event, The Prototype took the Playcare orphans into his base, The Labs, for unrevealed reasons, and kept them there for 10 years.

The Prototype referred to this rebellion as "The Hour of Joy", along with all the other toys, who remained in their previous locations. After the event concluded, the corpses of all those deceased employees were dragged to the deepest parts of the facility to be consumed by the toys as a source of sustenance to survive.

Aftermath[]

It remains unclear if any investigation was ever launched after the incident. PROJECT: PLAYTIME reveals that Leith Pierre sent in Resource Extraction Specialists to collect the toy parts in the Puzzle Pillars at some point and it is believed that this took place after the massacre. The Prototype sent Huggy, Mommy, and Boxy to stop them and use their bodies to feed the rest of the experiments who were starving around the factory, such as the Wuggies and Ruined Critters. Eventually, these Specialist operations concluded.

With all the humans being gone, the experiments were left without a steady source of food, which either dwindled or was cut off. The experiments, now desperate and out of options, began to turn on each other for sustenance. This method kept the experiments alive for the next decade. The outcry from concerned citizens and the haunted questions surrounding the mysterious disappearance of the employees left Playtime Co. with no other choice but to make the difficult decision to permanently close its doors. Thus, the legacy and hopes of Elliot Ludwig were forever tainted. However, in the following years, the company was eventually forgotten by the public, as the doors of the Playtime Co. factory were left unattended by the authorities until the eventual return of The Player in 2005.

Trivia[]

  • During the hallucination sequence of Home Sweet Home, there is a radio that plays a secret message in reverse. “I find your presence intrusive. After all this time you return. You come here and you kill and murder. You pillage and destroy. Your presence was demanded 10 years ago and you didn’t show up. 8/8/1995. You were supposed to be here. Why weren’t you here? You missed the event. You missed the meeting. You missed the party. You have no right to be here. 8/8/1995."
    • This recording is one of the few confirmations that the events of Poppy Playtime take place in 2005.
  • It was previously theorized that either The Prototype or CatNap freed Kissy Missy, as claw marks can be seen on the wooden board behind her.
    • This was disproven as in The Hour of Joy VHS tape, Kissy Missy is seen attacking the employees as they release her straps.
  • Poppy implies she heard voices and screams for a while, but never clarified for how long, meaning it could be possible some employees survived the initial event but were later hunted down and killed.
    • This does not confirm if The Hour of Joy did last for a full hour.
  • An intact Miss Delight appears in the tape as she and her sisters chase a man into a room.
  • It is possible that some of the various broken toys found around the facility were killed by other toys after The Hour of Joy in a quest for food.
  • The Hour of Joy taking place on August 8 is a possible reference to the Five Nights at Freddy's video game franchise, whose first game was released on August 8.
    • According to the writer Isaac Christopherson, The Hour of Joy taking place on August 8 is because that was the date he moved to St. Louis, and also the date that he met his girlfriend for the first time a year later, meaning that the date is not a reference to Five Nights at Freddy's.[1]
  • The year “1995” is a possible reference to the 1995 computer-animated comedy film “Toy Story”.
  • Although The Player worked at Playtime Co., Poppy tells them "they deserve the truth," confirming that they weren't aware of The Hour of Joy.
  • Although most of the employees and scientists were slaughtered, it's believed that a few people, including P. W. and Leith Pierre, managed to survive.
    • It's most likely that a few people who were near the main entrance escaped.
  • It is uncertain if the Smiling Critters aside from CatNap took part in the Hour of Joy. DogDay states that they resisted the Prototype's control, but though details are not elaborated upon, he implies they were killed for their resistance.
  • It is also uncertain if Pianosaurus took part in the Hour of Joy as it was revealed he was one of the toys from Safe Haven before being kicked out due to his Schizophrenia.
  • In the Warden's Office, Sawyer implies that one of the higher-ups might have conspired with the Bigger Bodies to stage the Hour of Joy, as the Warden points out that there should be failsafes and security measures that only those with executive access could override which would have prevented the Hour of Joy - the Warden explicitly names himself, Stella Greyber, Leith Pierre and Eddie M. N. Ritterman as being the only people in the factory with that level of clearance.
    • It is possible Sawyer himself was the said collaborator, as it is well-known he wanted revenge on Playtime Co. for betraying him, and he is allied with the Prototype. If this were true, it is, however, unknown how he could have helped the Prototype and the Bigger Bodies to escape as he lacked the executive access needed to remove the safeguards.
      • This does not mean Sawyer was not involved - Yarnaby can be heard participating in the Warden tape, and as he only takes orders from Sawyer, it would be logical to assume that Sawyer ordered him to do so.
  • Although the Hour of Joy was first directly named and demonstrated in Chapter 3, the implications of it has existed since Chapter 1 through the Final Log.
  • Based on some of the text during the emergency alert sent out during the event, Playtime Co.’s factory is located in the eastern side of the U.S.
  • According to the writer "Isaac Christopherson" the Hour of Joy was going to be called "The Rapture".
  • From what fans know[2], the Playcare orphans were either in the Playhouse, or in Home Sweet Home during the Hour of Joy.
