| — Harley "The Doctor" Sawyer, The Doctor Takeover | ||
The Doctor Takeover was a series of questions and answers conducted by Dr. Harley Sawyer after he took control of Mob Entertainment's account on Twitter, as a build-up to tease the console release of Chapter 4: Safe Haven. Analysis[]
Introduction[]
The Doctor introduces himself, stating that he is open for a time to answer some questions, showing that he has enough goodwill to cooperate with others.
Question 1[]
Sawyer responds by saying that though Yarnaby does crave affection from time to time, much to his annoyance, giving him scritches under the chin would very much result in the arm of the foolish person who dared try it to be bitten off, before laughing at the thought. This shows that he likes to laugh at others' misfortunes.
Question 2[]
He states his favorite color - grey - and elaborates on why this color appeals so much to him. His list of reasons show that he likes the color grey for its practical use, not for anything creative.
Question 3[]
Sawyer states that his accent is merely that, an accent, and eloquently describes how he uses language before bluntly stating that "you all are idiots." This shows that he sees others as below him if they deign ask about how he speaks.
Question 4[]
When confronted with a humorous question due his nature as a machine, the Doctor gives no response, instead deciding to move onto the next question, showing that his sense of humor does not extend to light joking and wordplay.
Question 5[]
In answering the question, Harley reveals that he liked Bron his youth.
Question 6[]
He is at first offended at the question before reluctantly divulging that he does indeed have games he could play on his operating system, though he states that he won't let anyone play them.
Question 7[]
Sawyer notes that cats can be a source of entertainment, revealing he had a cat in the past and that Yarnaby reminded him of it. He also states that he likes to "play" fetch with Yarnaby using a Smiling or Nightmare Critter and finding it hilarious. He concedes that he hasn't seen any Internet cat videos but assumes that if they are anything like the entertainment Yarnaby provides, they must be really good. This shows that he does still find enjoyment in a form of play with another being.
Question 8[]
The Doctor asserts that he has no ill will to any of his experiments, only that he has some inherent dislike of Simon Smoke's design. He ponders that it may have stemmed from seeing an assistant's fantasy novels scattered about Playtime Co., denigrating them as dreadful, what with them containing stories of winged beasts breathing fire and medieval characters. He finally reveals that he prefers science fiction instead. This shows that he likes to read more real and grounded stories that have a penchant for more unusual scientific concepts.
Question 9[]
He finds difficulty in picking out a single employee that he hates the most, highlighting two candidates: Leith Pierre and Dr. Bruno White, each having their respective reasons for garnering Sawyer's hatred. In the end, he leaves it up to chance by flipping a coin. However, a skull falls down into his hand, and Sawyer concludes the result to be heads, thus Leith is the one he hates the most. This signifies that Sawyer perhaps likes to let chance decide when he reaches an impasse.
Question 10[]
Sawyer expresses frustration at being asked for information that has already been made available. This shows that he does not take to ignorance kindly.
Question 11[]
Sawyer explains how he receives nutrition and stay alive while being reduced to a collection of organs, before admitting that he misses the sensation of taste. This shows that there are some limitations to his experiment form that do affect him personally.
Question 12[]
He briefly bursts out in anger at the notion of hanging his lab coats on Huggy Wuggy, but he quickly calms down and recounts a story of the Innovation team going through a "phase" of designing several pieces of furniture after Bron before refusing to elaborate further. This shows that he is unwilling to put himself in any unnecessary danger or do anything silly, and that he doesn't care a lot for creativity.
Question 13[]
Sawyer responds saying that there's one other experiment he would even consider swapping places with, but reveals that his predicament is only marginally better than his own. This shows that Sawyer is well aware of the limitations that the numerous experiments have and considers his own situation as almost the best to be under, with the best being not much better at all.
Question 14[]
The Doctor speaks somewhat highly of his achievement of combining three subjects into one experiment in Doey the Doughman, briefly mentioning that people had told him before he did it that it couldn't be done and that he had heard the same rhetoric with previous experimental procedures. This shows that he doesn't let others notions on what's possible and what's not deter him in the slightest.
Question 15[]
Sawyer states that Poppy reminds him of her father, Elliot Ludwig, before clarifying that it wasn't a compliment. This reinforces that Sawyer harbours some resentment towards him.
Question 16[]
He stresses his position of doctor before flatly refusing to save Pianosaurus from their demise. This shows he doesn't care what happens to the experiments and that he considers the dinosaur as merely expendable.
Audio and Transcripts[]
Introduction[]
"My name is Harley Sawyer. They call me The Doctor. I can see you have many questions... (clears throat) I'll do my best to answer them. Let's see..." |
Question: Does Yarnaby like scritches under his chin?[]
"While Experiment 1166 does indeed crave affection from time to time, annoyingly so, scritches would only be implemented from individuals foolish enough to dangle their appendages toward his ravenous maw. The fools would get what they deserve, which is to be the owner of a freshly bloody stump. (laughs)" |
Question: What is your favorite color?[]
Question: Does the evil accent come with the territory of work or did you always just sound like that?[]
"(sigh) This efficient and elegant dialect comes naturally, I assure you. From years of owning a brilliant mind, misunderstood by both my former employer and the scientific community at large - I am no mere impersonator of narrators of penguins, like some on this dreadful network might suggest. I merely manipulate language as one does numbers in a formula, something I am sure most denizens of this space can only begin to grasp - what I am saying is that you all are idiots. |
Question: If you get the flu, do you use an anti-virus?[]
"(sigh) I am not going to even dignify this with a legitimate response. Moving on..." |
Question: Do you have games on your OS?[]
Question: Have you seen Internet Cat videos?[]
"Internet cat videos? Hmm... hmm.. I believe cats could be a form as entertainment. I believe in my youth I had a cat. A beautiful, beautiful creature. Yarnaby actually reminds me of them. Sometimes, (chuckles) for my amusement, I would get one of those Smiling or Nightmare Critters, and I'd have it be the fact that Yarnaby plays fetch with them. Ah, I remember seeing it on the camera, even though I have no body, it was still hilarious nonetheless. I haven't seen Internet cat videos, but if they're anything like that, they must be very, very good." |
Question: Why do you hate Simon Smoke?[]
"I harbor no ill will towards any of my test subjects. But something about the reptilian simply rubbed me the wrong way. Perhaps it was how it reminded me of those dreadful fantasy novels one of my lab assistants would leave strewn about the facility, with insipid, giant-winged creatures bellowing fire and medieval characters. I'm more of a science fiction person, myself." |
Question: Who do you hate at Playtime Co. the most?[]
"Oh, it's hard to pick. There are oh so many choices. Leith, perhaps? That two-faced backstabber is certainly one of the most detestable individuals I've ever met. Then of course, there's my right hand: Dr. White. I thought he saw my vision, at least, but that man was nothing more than a leech. Hmm, doesn't quiet feel fair to decide. Let's flip a coin - heads, it's Leith, tails, it's White. *flips coin*. Oh! Look at that... it's heads." |
Question: Who was YOUR first Bigger Body?[]
"I thought we went over this already, did we not? Would it kill you to look at my reports?! It's all there in the documentation." |
Question: Do you miss eating/drinking?[]
Question: Have you ever used Huggy Wuggy as a coat rack for your lab coats?[]
"Don't be ridiculous, of course not! Although, for a time, we had those coat racks shaped like Bron. The Innovation team went through a... "phase", let's say, where they kept designing furniture to look like him. (sigh) Don't ask." |
Question: If you could swap places with any other Playtime Co. experiment, who would it be and why?[]
"There's only one I'd even consider swapping places with. Though, his predicament is only marginally better than mine." |
Question: What do you think of Doey? What makes him unique among your experiments?[]
Question: Mr. Harley, would you have saved Pianosaurus from his demise?[]
"Dr. Harley. And, no. Rest in keys." |

Trivia[]
- Many facts about Sawyer were revealed with this Q&A, though none of them are particularly important to the lore.
- When answering some questions, the Doctor uses the multiple-eye and teeth forms, which were not used in Chapter 4, as well as some alternate eye forms that are unique to the takeover.
- This Q&A was actually the second time that fans got to directly communicate with Sawyer, albeit only members of the 'Partners in Crime' program were able to in this instance. The first time was during the Chapter 4 Icepick ARG, in which players could send emails to Sawyer, with him replying to most of them.
- The introductory lines from Sawyer in the first video are a reference to his first lines from the "Can you hear us? Can you see this?" VHS tape, in which Sawyer was first revealed.
- The science community at large had the same opinion on Sawyer as Elliot Ludwig, meaning that up until his career at Playtime Co., he wasn't really all that successful. This is proven in Pierre's Invitation.
- Sawyer saying that Poppy reminds him of her father means that in some way, Poppy resembles him, whether it be through personality, mannerisms, or even morals.
- Among the concept art of the takeover is Sawyer in the "Absolute Cinema" meme pose.[1]
- Harley refers to Dr. White in the past tense, but Leith in the present tense. This strongly implies Leith did in fact survive The Hour of Joy.
