| — Poppy Playtime referring to the Scientists, Untitled Tape | ||
The Scientists were a group of Playtime Co. workers who are mentioned various times throughout the franchise. They were the employees responsible for creating the experiments.
History[]
Backstory[]
Playtime Co. had a science team that would help create biological experiments for the company, most of which were made made with the goal of bringing life to something that should be inanimate. Experiment 814 is one such example - a dead rat was submerged into poppy gel and later had an electric shock applied to it for a revival attempt. However, there weren't any noteworthy results. Other experiments, such as Poppy Playtime, who was created entirely with biological parts, proved to be extremely successful. Eventually, the team created experiment 1006, The Prototype, using both biological and mechanical components. Despite his intelligence, he was hostile toward staff and concerningly violent, and so he was securely contained.
Following CatNap's recall, the company began to struggle from declining profits, confidential projects being seen by staff, and a host of other problems.[2] Desperate to save the company, Leith Pierre hired investigator Gerad Lockehart to track down graduates of Elliot Ludwig's old Young Geniuses Program, in which young people could join Playtime Co. and Ludwig to try and answer the supposedly unanswerable questions of the world. When Leith was given Lockehart's results, there were a few names that caught his attention, including Dr. Harley Sawyer's. This led to Sawyer,[3] as well as various other scientists, being hired at Playtime to try and improve their experiments. After many failures, Sawyer proposed the Bigger Bodies Initiative, a program aimed to create giant, living toys to work for the factory, with this idea being accepted by the executives.[2]
Activity[]
Various facilities were built, such as the Game Station and The Labs. At the former location, the scientists would watch as the experiments' orphan test subjects played through minigames that would test their abilities, writing down their results on assessment forms. In Playcare, the orphans would be put to sleep every night with Red Smoke, making experimentation on them more convenient for the scientists. They would perform procedures on the children at the laboratory as part of their "Golden Path", using the Secondary Lab to extract resources from any failed experiments. It is known that the scientists would even torture the experiments at times for research,[4] Poppy being one such example, as she would have her internal organs constantly removed and put back in.[5]
But of course, all of their illegal activity was bound to be discovered eventually, which is exactly what happened when an employee named Rowan Stoll found out about the company's secrets. Before he could leak any information to the authorities or the public, he was killed by the first successful Bigger Body, Boxy Boo. However, even though the company was getting into a better state thanks to the initiative, they were still working with creatures who had been tortured and essentially used as slaves, so naturally, there were occasional rebellions. Multiple incidents took place throughout the 1990's in which experiments killed various scientists, such as when CatNap broke out of his containment cell and murdered the employees who were sent to subdue him,[6] or when Huggy Wuggy escaped the factory and 6 members of the security team who were sent out to bring him back were killed. Incidents like these led to the construction of The Shelf, a prison facility which could securely house the experiments. But despite the precautions taken, the most consequential rebellion was still yet to come.
The Hour of Joy[]
August 8th 1995 was the day of an event orchestrated by 1006: The Hour of Joy. With his influence, the experiments turned hostile to the staff and began to kill all of them, both the guilty and innocent. By the end of the massacre, the factory was littered with corpses and all of the scientists responsible for creating the Bigger Bodies had been killed.
