Richard Lovitz,[7] also known as Rich, is a recurring character in Poppy Playtime, debuting in Chapter 1: A Tight Squeeze.
Hired at Playtime Co. at some point, Rich's gruff personality and short temper would leave him with very few allies at the company. Rich, in turn, was vexed by how Playtime ran their company, as some of their questionable decisions impeded his job performance.
During a shift in the storeroom, Rich vocalized his complaints to a fellow coworker after being unable to locate boxes containing Huggy Wuggy toys. As per the F.U.N.F.A.C.T.O.R.Y. guidelines, Rich was reported to Security, who notified Human Resources of what transpired and gave their recommendation for his punishment.[7] HR complied with Security's recommendation, demoting him to the Rejected Room, much to his frustration.
Fortunately, things took a turn for the better. During one of Rich's shifts, where he and his fellow coworker Stuart were delivering a toy shipment to Playcare, Stuart revealed that he selected Rich as a potential candidate for his replacement, due to his (at the time) upcoming retirement.
Following this, Rich accepted the position and became the new Head of Shipping, gaining a new lease on life.
Personality[]
Rich seems to be a hard but disgruntled worker, which can be concluded from the fact that he became annoyed by the amount of pressure put on him. Aside from the pressure, he still cares about the orphans for whom the toys are intended for, which shows he's good at heart. In "Security Camera: Rich + Avery", he is deemed as the more vocal one and is always complaining, while Avery is essentially trying to make him calm down. This complaining leads to Rich's demotion.
Rich's gruff nature and pessimistic attitude leaves him with very few friends at the company, something that he has acknowledged. However, as seen following his promotion, Rich seems to have worked on himself and gained control over his anger issues, even giving advice to a colleague on a more mature way to express their negative feelings. Word about this improvement in Rich's attitude appears to have made its way around the factory, as the employees in Storage and Supply, Rich's old place of work, often talk about his promotion.
History[]
Backstory[]
As heard in a tape, Rich ranted about the incompetence of Playtime Co. when it came to managing their shipments, briefly losing his temper before being calmed down by Avery. He acknowledged the company's orphan program was for a good cause, but wished it didn't cause more shipments to pile up.[2] Security were given access to this recording, resulting in Rich's demotion to the Rejected Room.[7]
After his demotion, Rich remarked about how he supposedly complained to the company for years with no response, leaving him more angered and stressed.[3] Despite this, he still had lunch with Avery on Fridays, revealed on a nearby post-it note stating, "Have lunch with Avery Fri."
Promotion[]
Rich showcased an effort to control his temper on behalf of his wife, something his fellow colleague Stuart took notice of. Additionally, he became a favored but currently unofficial candidate for Stuart's position for when he would soon retire, the former expressing his surprise and thankfulness at this decision.[4]
Some time later, Rich called a meeting with Kid and asked him to explain about a confrontation that happened previously which was reported to him. Kid explained that he had an argument with a line worker named Rod and lost his temper on the factory floor. Rich showed empathy for Kid and told him to come to him in the future if he felt angered instead of losing his temper. This tape reveals that Rich took Stuart's position as Head of Shipping.[5]
Sometime around this period, Rich wrote to his old colleague Avery, mentioning that there were rumors going around about sinister goings-on in the factory and asking how the atmosphere was in the warehouse where he worked.[8] Avery responded that most of the gossip was about Rich himself and his promotion, mentioning that him and his colleagues were very busy and being given lots of work around the time.[9]
Trivia[]
- There are multiple theories surrounding Rich's significance in the game.
- Firstly, that he is actually The Player. This is partly due to the fact that he openly expresses concern for the children's well-being and questions their living situation, and partly because his fate is not made clear. Instead, his experiences within the company are slowly expounded upon throughout each chapter.
- The second theory is the complete opposite; that Rich is actually Exp. 1006, aka The Prototype. This theory is due in part to the same reasons people think he might be The Player - his concern for the children, his skepticism about their living situation, and his fate being open-ended thus far - but also additionally because of his demonstrated anger toward the other employees of Playtime Co.
- This theory was disproven in the Fortnite documents, as it can be seen that Rich and Avery were writing to eachother in the 1990s, after The Prototype had been created.
- Rich is not given a last name in the game, but it is revealed to be Lovitz in the Orientation Notebook.
