| — Rabie Baby's Twitter intro | ||
Rabie Baby[5] is one of the Nightmare Critters, a group of eight characters created by Playtime Co. who (presumably) serve as the antithesis of the Smiling Critters. She appears in Chapter 4: Safe Haven as a minor antagonist in the form of multiple and hostile small toys.
Appearance[]
Rabie Baby is an anthropomorphic bat, characterized by white fur that complements her expressive black eyes, which (like the other Nightmare Critters) are furrowed in a permanent glare. Her features extend to pink wing membranes, hindlimbs, and ears (the insides of which are pink), while a touch of magenta graces her paws, feet, and around her eyes. In line with the other Nightmare Critters (and the Smiling Critters), Rabie sports a perpetual wide grin with a darkened inner mouth but possesses two large protruding fangs, likely as a notion to vampire bats. A black zipper line gracefully adorns her center, with the zipper showcasing a captivating crimson blood drop pendant. Rabie also emits a bubblegum scent from the little spray applicator in her mouth.
Rabie Baby's cartoon appearance notably differs from her toy appearance. Her arms are now replaced by pink wing membranes and magenta forelimbs, with a single claw on each wing. Additionally, the zipper line is removed, white pupils and a fur collar are visible, and the zipper pendant is now attached to a black necklace.
Personality[]
| “ | Rabie Baby couldn't keep a secret if her life depended on it. If there's one thing in the world she loves, it's gossiping, and she's very practiced at it. She has no concept of privacy or boundaries, and if she's in the room you can bet she's eavesdropping on someone. Don't worry; if she ever runs out of juicy secrets to talk about, she'll just make some up! | ” |
| — Critter Entries[5] | ||
According to her character description, Rabie Baby is the gossiper of the Nightmare Critters. She is mentally incapable of keeping secrets and won't allow others to keep their secrets from her. Boundaries and privacy are foreign concepts to Rabie, and she will do everything within her power to obtain even the smallest morsel of gossip. It is this nature that has caused others to become wary of her presence, as it means she's listening in on conversations. Should she be unable to obtain any stories, she will formulate and spread her own gossip, meaning her stories have a greater chance of being inaccurate. Due to her nature it’s practically impossible to trust a word she says.
History[]
Backstory[]
In the late 1980s or early 1990s, Rabie Baby was released as part of the Nightmare Critters toy line.
Jane Ellswin[]
In the early 1990s, the scientists wished to create an experiment version of Rabie Baby as Experiment 1198. The orphan Jane Ellswin was assigned the toy and played through the minigames at the Game Station a few times as part of her testing. However, in Statues, she used her knowledge to figure out a way to make PJ Pug-a-Pillar lose her,[6] something which interested Harley Sawyer and only made him more confident in Jane's eligibilty for the "Project: Rabie Baby".[7]
Chapter 4: Safe Haven[]
In the Toy Graveyard, after The Shelf's gate closes and The Player approaches it, along with the Mini Huggies and other Nightmares Critters, several Rabie Baby plush toys appear to attack them, while they defend themselves with Flare Hand. As soon as The Player leaves The Shelf entrance, the attacks subside and the Rabie Baby plushies, as well as other Nightmare Critters and Mini Huggies, retreat.
On the East Block's lower floor, on The Doctor's orders, as well as other Nightmare Critters, several Rabie Baby plush toys appear to attack The Player, who tries to repel them again using the Flare Hand. After a certain amount of time in which The Player is tested by The Doctor, he uses a sound of Yarnaby's roar, causing the Rabie Baby plush toys, as well as the Nightmare Critters and Mini Huggies, to retreat.
As The Player walks through the Foundation cave to collect explosives, several Rabie Baby plush toys, as well as other Nightmare Critters plush toys, and Mini Huggies reappear and attack, forcing them to counterattack using the Flare Hand.
Trivia[]
- Her name references Rabies, a viral disease transmitted primarily through saliva entering bite wounds, that attacks the brain and spinal cord. Bats are the most common carriers of rabies in North and South America.
- Rabie was the third Nightmare Critter to have her description revealed on Twitter (X).
- Her pendant, a blood drop, could be a play on vampires, known for sucking blood, and her species, which is closely associated with vampires and includes the blood-drinking vampire bat.
- Her pink coloration may be based on the color of a northern ghost bat while the overall design may be inspired by the Honduran white bat.
- She is the only Nightmare Critter with no humanoid arms (like real-world bats, the forelimbs are her wings).
- Her plush toy version carries several notable differences from her cartoon design beyond stylistic changes common to all Critter toys:
- She has no wings and has humanoid arms as other Nightmare Critters.
- She also has furry rabbit-like tail which is not present in any species of bats.
- She also lacks the fur collar the cartoon version has.
- There is also a possibility that her inverse is Bubba Bubbaphant due to the fact that her personality involves giving gossiped/false information for harm and Bubba gives studious/true information for benefit.
- She also bears some resemblance to the Sonic the Hedgehog character Rouge the Bat.
- Interestingly, she's the only Nightmare Critter, besides Maggie Mako's signature scent of chocolate, whose signature scent doesn't seem to match the observable theme of heavier scents typically more appreciated by teens and adults. Chewing bubblegum however is very associated with the gossipy valley girl stock character/archetype making it very fitting for her personality.
- Rabie, Simon Smoke, and Poe are the only Nightmare Critters capable of flight.
