The Orphans are the children who lived at Playcare. Certain orphans were chosen to be test subjects for Playtime Co.'s experiments after undergoing various tests at the Game Station and obtaining a high enough score to be experimented on.
History[]
Backstory[]
In 1976, Elliot Ludwig, the founder of Playtime Co., opened Playcare, an on-site orphanage at the factory. Countless orphans were sent here with the hope of having a safe home to live in. Additionally, the company also ran the "Foster and Adoptive Care Initiative", which encouraged employees to personally foster orphans, with the chance of receiving benefits for doing so.
Playcare[]
The Bigger Bodies Initiative was introduced in 1990 as a way to cut the company's costs by creating giant, living toys to work for free and without breaks. However, the experiments that would come of it required human organs to live and breathe as actual creatures. Since there was an entire village of orphans within the factory, it was decided that they would be used for The Doctor's experiments. They could be taken out of the orphanage and experimented on since there were no parents to look out for them, and any counselors who didn't have knowledge of the initiative could simply be told that a child was adopted if they ever went missing. Additionally, the curriculum in the School of Playcare was even altered to try and manipulate the children into believing that "sacrifices" for the sake of "innovation" was perfectly justifiable.
The children would be put to sleep every night with Red Smoke, allowing the scientists to take them out of Playcare for check-ups or experimentation whenever they liked. But this gassing method was already being used by the late 1980's, with its original intention being to ease the counselors' workloads and to give the children better quality sleep, which is ironic as it would occasionally cause nightmares, as seen with orphan Marie Payne.
Game Station[]
Playtime Co. had Warrenbach Construction build the Game Station, a games room within the factory. To the average person, it just looked like a fun space for the orphans, but the reality was that it was actually a testing facility. The orphans would play through three games which would test their mental and physical abilities, and their results would be documented on assessment forms. Children who scored the highest would later be turned into their assigned toy.
The Hour of Joy[]
After years of the orphans being used as test subject, The Hour of Joy arrived, an event which would put an end to the scientists' work. All of the experiments who were once children turned hostile toward the staff and wiped out the ones who had tortured them, while also murdering the innocent employees who knew nothing about the Bigger Bodies Initiative in the process. Seemingly everyone within the factory was killed, except the orphans, who were allegedly taken to The Labs by The Prototype and still remain there in 2005 "alive, but sleeping".
