Ollie |
“ | I know you are probably mad at Poppy for not letting you escape.. But she needs you! We need you! You are our mission! Together, we can save a lot of people. Including you! | ” |
— Ollie, Poppy Playtime Chapter 3: "Deep Sleep" |
Ollie is a major character in Chapter 3: "Deep Sleep" of Poppy Playtime. He is an unseen living entity who communicates with The Player through their Telephone.
Appearance[]
There is currently no known appearance towards what Ollie looks like, as he solely communicates with The Player through their phone. However, this has led to much theorizing on what his appearance would be.
Personality[]
Ollie seems to care about the Experiments, opting to help The Player and Poppy defeat the Prototype to save all the toys he knows from certain death. Despite the harsh conditions in Playtime Co., he is unusually upbeat and joyful.
He possesses a lot of knowledge about Playcare, as he tells The Player where to go and what to do in each location they go in. He is also well aware of the threats in Playcare, especially CatNap, informing The Player on how to deal with them, which implies he has studied the area's threats heavily.
History[]
Project: Playtime[]
“ | Compassion is the discarded gem of the forsaken, a relic of innocence left behind like a misfit toy! Call me a forsaken soul, but I am but a wayward plaything cast aside and lost in the depths of abandonment, seeking purpose in the shadows. | ” |
— Ollie (Theorized) |
The phone from Chapter 3: "Deep Sleep" originally debuted in the second phase of the multiplayer spin-off title, Project: Playtime, without a use. It is gifted to the player via a mysterious entity and, given the context of Chapter 3, the phone is heavily associated with Ollie, implying that Ollie is the entity that contacts the player. Additionally, Ollie gives a small speech in the trailer for Phase 3 of Project: Playtime, saying that he is "but a wayward plaything", implying that he is one of the many experiments performed by Playtime Co.
Chapter 3: "Deep Sleep"[]
Ollie first makes contact with The Player after they escape from the Trash Compactor CatNap dumped them in. He tells The Player that he doesn't want them to die, and so decides to help them, first by sending them a battery to open a door. After The Player finds the wreck of the Train, Ollie explains that while they may be mad at Poppy for not allowing them to escape, she and Ollie need The Player's help in saving a lot of people. Ollie directs The Player to Playcare and tells them about CatNap and the Smiling Critters.
Ollie next contacts The Player when they arrive in Playcare. He laments the state of disrepair that Playcare has fallen into, before directing The Player to underneath the statue to collect a key to the Gas Production Zone. Once in the Gas Production Zone, Ollie tells The Player about the Red Smoke that is produced in the factory, and that they will need to redirect it using the machine in the center of the Gas Production Zone in order to continue. To do that, Ollie tells The Player they need to power the machine. Despite The Player successfully powering on and starting the machine, somebody cuts the power to Playcare, forcing Ollie to direct The Player to diverting the power from several backup generators located in the various buildings within Playcare.
During the nightmare The Player suffers in Home Sweet Home due to Red Smoke exposure, they find a phone. When they answer it, Ollie tells them that they need to run. It's not clear if this is actually Ollie trying to wake the player up, or whether it is part of the hallucination.
After The Player restores the backup generator in Home Sweet Home, and following their meeting with Poppy and Kissy Missy, Ollie contacts the player again, directing them to reel a cable from Home Sweet Home into the power sockets in the room below the statue. Once completed, Ollie explains they need to activate at least one more backup generator to restore power. He advises against trying the Playhouse as it is especially dangerous, and instead sends The Player a key for the School. Ollie warns The Player that he won't be able to connect to them on that side of the dome, but before he can warn them about Miss Delight, he is cut off, leaving The Player alone until he navigates the School, the cave system and the Playhouse.
Ollie contacts the Player again to make sure they are uninjured following their trip through the Playhouse. He asks the Player if they saw the shrine CatNap had built to honor The Prototype. He then briefly explains the story about Theodore Grambell being saved by The Prototype, and assures them that if the shrine scared them, the real Prototype would be much scarier. With the backup generator in the School lost thanks to Miss Delight destroying it, Ollie sends The Player into the Counselor's Office instead to draw the power from its backup generator. He warns them about CatNap, informing The Player that CatNap can hide in any shadow and that he will take away anything The Player has to defend himself, before killing them.
Once The Player activates the backup generator in the Counselor's Office, Ollie informs them that something has gone wrong and that they need to plug the cord from the Counselor's Office into the terminal under the statue. He then sends one last key - the key Poppy used prior to start Playcare's backup power - and asks The Player to take the cord from there. Once that is complete, Ollie sends The Player a large blue battery they can use to power the machine in the Gas Production Zone. Before The Player can plug it in and complete the task Ollie has given them, they are ambushed by CatNap.
Following CatNap's death, Ollie contacts The Player one last time to congratulate them on defeating CatNap and deciding to stay with Poppy to finish the mission.
Trivia[]
- Chapter 3 doesn't provide much information regarding who, or what, Ollie is. As a result, there are multiple theories regarding his potential identity:
- Some have assumed that he is an orphan who lived in Playcare, having avoided experimentation, becoming one of the sole survivors of The Hour of Joy.
- CatNap may have kept some children safe from the hostile experiments during the Hour of Joy, and afterwards, these children were most likely raised by the experiments after the Hour of Joy, which could explain Ollie's knowledge of Playcare and CatNap. It is plausible, however, that some of the children (and possibly Ollie, by extension) were babies by the time the Hour of Joy occurred (noting there are cribs in Home Sweet Home), and were then raised by either the more intelligent and caring experiments or other children who became teenagers within those 10 years.
- However, this poses some problems: It has been 10 years since The Hour of Joy took place in the current timeline. If Ollie was human, food would be an issue, as it is shown to be relatively scarce across the chapters so far, barring cannibalism. Furthermore, if he was a child, this means Ollie should be around 15-20 years old at least, and therefore should have a deeper voice. However, the voice heard in-game sounds like it belongs to a child that is below 10 years old, so it may also be plausible that Ollie is also a living toy to be able to keep a child-like voice, not to mention the rate of a toy surviving The Hour of Joy is higher compared to being a human.
- It is also possible that Ollie is likely a part of the Advanced Security System that Leith Pierre refers to in one of the VHS Tapes of Chapter 1: "A Tight Squeeze".
- This is further established by the fact that Ollie's status is unknown on whether he is a human or not, and has knowledge of the systems and the inner workings of the factory. He helps Poppy and The Player all the time, warning of any dangers, using premeditated words as to seemingly abide by some unknown factory policies: "No ouchies or lost body parts?" as well as remaining distant whenever needed.[1]
- One mini theory was that Ollie might be Bobby BearHug due to her cutout to never having a screaming line like the others, only saying she was lost.
- However, they are different genders despite sounding similar.
- Fans have speculated potential connections between Ollie and Hoppy Hopscotch of the Smiling Critters plush line, as both are enthusiastic in personality, show willingness to help others, and have green-colored names in dialogue texts. The themes around helpfulness in Chapter 3 recur additionally via a flare gun next to the Hoppy cutout and Batteries with lightning symbols comparable to Hoppy's pendant that help The Player solve puzzles.
- Despite the similarities in personality, DogDay asserts that he and CatNap are the last of the Smiling Critters, meaning the rest, including Hoppy, may no longer be alive. This is likely further supported by some of the Smiling Critters' cardboard cutouts, which end in violent screaming, also including Hoppy.
- However, it's possible that DogDay isn't aware of the other Smiling Critters' fates.
- Another detail is that Hoppy is female, while Ollie is stated to be male.

- It is theorized that Ollie is secretly the Prototype, due to a tape in Chapter 3 revealing that 1006 can replay and rearrange voices he hears.
- Fans were quick to note the similarities between Ollie and The Mimic, posing as Gregory, from Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach - RUIN, particularly on their nearly identical voices, with many mistaking him for Gregory before he gives his name. They are fairly similar in the concept that both contact their respective players through a communications device, and in RUIN, The Mimic uses a voice belonging to a character named Gregory to trick the player into freeing it. If the theory is true that the Prototype is doing the same thing but with Ollie's voice, the two games may share a similar plot twist, assuming that Ollie is the Prototype. This is more than likely a coincidence since both titles were developed around the same time.
- While both Ollie and Gregory sound almost the same, they have different voice actors.
- However, there is a small problem with the theory. 1006's voice is a mixture of other voices all put together, whereas Ollie is very consistent with how his voice sounds.

- The mysterious narrator in the Story So Far series calls Ollie "infuriating". Given the implication at the end of the recap of Chapter 3 that the narrator could be the Prototype mimicking the voice of Harley Sawyer, if this is the case, the narrator calling Ollie as such would contradict the idea of him being the Prototype.
- It has been suggested that Ollie's name can be derived from the names of 'Elliot' and 'Touille', suggesting either one could be Ollie's true identity.
- Some have assumed that he is an orphan who lived in Playcare, having avoided experimentation, becoming one of the sole survivors of The Hour of Joy.
- It is theorized that Ollie is behind the mysterious messages in Project: Playtime, due to his relation with the phone in Chapter 3: Deep Sleep, which is gifted to the player in Project: Playtime by an entity (who might be the Prototype) that uses the tapes to communicate in the game.
- Although Poppy and Kissy know Ollie, it's plausible they've never met Ollie in-person.
- He states that they (The Player) can "save a lot of people", despite there being almost no human present in the game so far.
- It's likely he sees the other experiments, if he is one himself, as still being somewhat like people. However, if he is the Prototype, he may be deliberately manipulating The Player for his own ends.
- He is also implied to have seen the Prototype, as he says, "if you thought [the Prototype's shrine] was scary, just wait until you see the real thing."
- He refers to the safety protocols of the Gas Production Zone as "dumb", implying they are an annoyance to him.
- Ollie was originally going to be replaced with an older man called "Ace" before Chapter 3's release. Why this decision wasn't made is unknown.[2]
- Ollie is able to track The Player throughout their journey, as evidenced by his remarking on multiple events. Examples include, but are not limited to, the crashed train, exiting the Playhouse, and bypassing the safety protocols of the Gas Production Zone.
- There doesn't appear to be any clear way he is able to see what The Player is doing. However, there are cameras around the map, meaning it's possible that Ollie somehow has access to the security system and is watching The Player through the cameras.
