Gameplay[]

In fashion to Mob Entertainment's multiplayer spin-off title Project: Playtime, Monsters & Mortals introduces an extended version of the Chapter 1: A Tight Squeeze map players had experienced upon entering Playtime Co.'s Factory back during Poppy Playtime's first installment. With the collaboration in place, three characters were introduced as a boss, trap and monster.

As part of the new monster lineup, Kissy Missy emerges with her unique ability called "Toy Tornado." This powerful skill enables her to launch Cat-Bee toys that explode upon impact with any surface, inflicting a poisonous burning effect on nearby targets for a duration of six seconds. Furthermore, Kissy Missy can spin while using this ability, dealing additional damage to those caught within her range. In addition to her formidable skills, Kissy Missy comes with a variety of skins to choose from. Players can enjoy two recolor options, each referencing the iconic CatNap and Huggy Wuggy characters. Furthermore, Kissy Missy also boasts distinctive skin that features a heart-shaped head.

Cat-Bee was introduced as a trap, which can only be activated during Trap Time upon players activating the Portal Box. When the trap time is activated, multiple Cat Bees will spawn on the ground throughout the map. These Cat Bees remain stationary but pose a threat to players who get too close. When approached, they release a poisonous cloud that inflicts damage over time and slows down the affected players. Even after leaving the cloud, players will continue to take damage for 5 seconds, resulting in a total of 50 damage. To avoid this, players can attack the Cat Bees carefully and take them out before they release the poisonous cloud. Three heavy attacks or six light attacks will eliminate a Cat Bee. However, it is important to wait for a second after killing a Cat Bee before moving forward, as they remain active for a brief moment. This will help players avoid any lingering clouds that may still pose a threat. Alternatively, players can also destroy the poisonous clouds themselves. A single heavy attack or two light attacks will remove the clouds. If a player's Ultimate Ability involves an attack, it can easily shred through the clouds as well.

To intensify the gameplay experience, the Playtime Co. Factory now features the formidable boss, Huggy Wuggy. This monstrous entity joins forces with the other Monsters in a relentless pursuit to eliminate any mortal players. Unlike in the original game, Huggy Wuggy can be temporarily defeated by both the Monsters and Mortals. However, it is unfortunate that no distinctive new mortal characters were introduced in this update.

Reception[]

The release of the Monsters & Mortals DLC came as a surprise to fans, as there had been a lack of communication regarding the development process. Glowstick Entertainment, the game's developer, had initially expressed their intention to release the DLC on a special date. However, it was revealed that Mob Entertainment exerted pressure on the development team, leading to the unexpected release on December 22, 2023.

Despite the unexpected release, most fans had positive expectations and were expecting an experience similar to Project: Playtime. Critics had much to say, however, were impressed with the extensive and maze-like map introduced in Playtime Co.'s Factory. The new setting added an extra level of stress and intensity to the gameplay, building upon the original setting witnessed in Chapter 1: A Tight Squeeze. Furthermore, fans commended the character designs in the DLC, with particular praise for the standout character, Kissy Missy. Although some noted her attacks resembled an altered copy of Hanako Yamada's ultimate ability, she was well-received as a formidable ranged monster. Her inclusion added depth and excitement to the gameplay experience.

Despite the positive reception of the map design, it appears that some players found the Playtime Co.'s Factory map to be confusing, particularly due to the introduction and expansion of ventilation systems. These systems were meant to encapsulate the Huggy Chase, which elevated the Poppy Playtime franchise to the level of triple-A titles. However, the boss encounter itself received criticism for being underwhelming. The Huggy Boss was deemed too light, dealing minimal damage and lacking in speed or threatening capabilities, similar to Fun Girl in terms of lethality. Fans also mocked the developers for making the Cat-Bee traps lethal as the bosses should, as they were unavoidable and punishing, requiring three heavy attacks to destroy.

Originally scheduled for release in July of the same year, the DLC was significantly delayed and released in its current state. It was intended to feature two additional characters, Boxy Boo and the Player. However, these characters had been removed due to the "DLC did not work out."[1] As a result, the DLC content went back to its initial plan of only having the ability to host a map and play as a single character. With the lack of promised content, some players felt that it was not worth the price being charged.[2]

There appears to be a presumption and general acceptance among fans that Mob Entertainment exerted pressure on Glowstick Entertainment to release the Monsters & Mortals DLC. It is believed that the development team started the project at the last minute due to this pressure, resulting in a disappointing release. As a result of this disappointment, fans who are familiar with the game Dark Deception: Monsters & Mortals recommend exploring other DLCs from that game. On the other hand, fans of the Poppy Playtime franchise have started showing interest in returning to Project: Playtime, possibly as a result of their dissatisfaction with the Monsters & Mortals DLC. It seems that the unexpected release and lack of communication from the development team have created an atmosphere of disappointment and frustration among the fan base.
