Maggie Mako is one of the Nightmare Critters, a group of eight characters created by Playtime Co. who (presumably) serve as the antithesis of the Smiling Critters. She was made into a toy by Playtime Co. and was featured in Chapter 4: Safe Haven as a minor antagonist in the form of small hostile plush toys.

Appearance

Maggie Mako is an anthropomorphic shark, characterized by turquoise skin that complements her thin eyebrows and expressive black eyes, which (like the other Nightmare Critters) are furrowed into a permanent glare. Her features extend to teal claws, feet, head fin, and tail (the upper portion of which contains a small triangular divot), while a touch of white graces her lower jaw, belly, and markings surrounding her eyes. In line with the other Nightmare Critters (and the Smiling Critters), Maggie sports a perpetual wide grin with a darkened inner mouth but possesses sharp triangular teeth. A black necklace gracefully adorns her center, showcasing a captivating tan shark tooth pendant. Maggie also emits the scent of chocolate from the little spray applicator in her mouth.

According to her character description, Maggie Mako is the glutton of the Nightmare Critters. Her thoughts primarily revolve around her stomach, specifically its contents and whether or not it is full. Her highest levels of joy only blossom when she is gorging on food, and she is not finicky about her meals. Unfortunately, her eating habits consist mostly of sugary substances, as she possesses a serious sweet tooth. Maggie abhors vegetables and couldn't care less about healthy eating. In fact, she will openly mock anyone who attempts to give her advice on this topic.

History

Chapter 4: Safe Haven

In the Toy Graveyard, after The Shelf's gate closes and The Player approaches it, along with the Mini Huggies and other Nightmares Critters, several Maggie Mako plush toys appear to attack them, while they defend themselves with Flare Hand. As soon as The Player leaves The Shelf entrance, the attacks subside and the Maggie Mako plushies, as well as other Nightmare Critters and Mini Huggies, retreat.

On the East Block's lower floor, on The Doctor's orders, as well as other Nightmare Critters, several Maggie Mako plush toys appear to attack The Player, who tries to repel them again using the Flare Hand. After a certain amount of time in which The Player is tested by The Doctor, he uses a sound of Yarnaby's roar, causing the Maggie Mako plush toys, as well as the Nightmare Critters and Mini Huggies, to retreat.

As The Player walks through the Foundation cave to collect explosives, several Maggie Mako plush toys, as well as other Nightmare Critters plush toys, and Mini Huggies reappear to attack, forcing them to counterattack using the Flare Hand.

• Maggie Mako was the eighth and final Nightmare Critter to have her description revealed on Twitter (X).
• Maggie is the first critter to be based off a fully aquatic creature.
  • The aquatic creature she is based on is the mako shark, hence her name.
• The scent of chocolate triggers relaxation and overall happier moods.
  • Chocolate is also commonly used as a shorthand symbol of gluttony, which Maggie is particularly known for.
  • Ironically, most healthy foods contain a random amount of sugar. And chocolate is bad for most animals, especially dogs.
• Maggie's inverse may be PickyPiggy, as the latter encourages healthy eating and teaches kids about the importance of a healthy body, while Maggie doesn't care about being healthy and will primarily eat items like sugary foods.
• Maggie Mako's tooth pendant can also be interpreted as a napkin or handkerchief around her neck, considering how she loves to eat, especially when it comes to sugary foods.
• Maggie, Simon and Allister are the only critters with actual names.
• Interestingly, Maggie Mako lacks a dorsal fin on her back (though it is visible on her head in the official artwork), which all sharks typically have.
  • Additionally, Maggie has fingers on her pectoral fins, where traditional sharks do not.
• Maggie is the only Critter, save for Rabie Baby's outlines, with eyes different from the others. Emphasized by the white eyelids on the outer rims.
• Despite Maggie's bio description mentioning her enjoying high sugary foods almost exclusively, there have been several examples seen of her having an actually diverse diet:
  • In the 2024 Thanksgiving image posted by Mob Entertainment, Maggie can be seen about to take a large bite out of a turkey leg while attending Thanksgiving dinner with the other critters.
  • In the 2025 Halloween image, Maggie is seen being chastised by Doey for having messily eaten the insides of a pumpkin (or the pumpkin itself in its entirety).
