“ | Hey, I'm KickinChicken! Want to go outside and hang out? | ” |
— KickinChicken |
KickinChicken is a toy produced by Playtime Co., debuting in Chapter 3: "Deep Sleep". Miniature versions of KickinChicken reside in Playcare with the rest of the Smiling Critters line-up.
Appearance[]
KickinChicken is an anthropomorphic chicken with yellow feathers, four-digit wings, black eyes, a half-moon-shaped upper beak, and a three-feathered crown extending down the right side of his face. His feet and upper beak have an orange color. Similar to the other Smiling Critters, KickinChicken is depicted with a wide toothless grin (the inner mouth shrouded in darkness), and he possesses a black zipper line running down his chest and belly, with the zipper sporting an orange colored star pendant.
KickinChicken's cartoon appearance is roughly the same as his toy appearance, albeit with his zipper line removed, the addition of white pupils, and the zipper pendant attached to a black necklace.
Personality[]
“ | This is KickinChicken, the cool kid of the crew, and he maintains that sense of cool through anything, even in the most tense of situations. Knock him down, and he'll pick himself up, brush himself off, and ask: "What's next?" | ” |
— KickinChicken's character description[2] |
According to his character description, KickinChicken is depicted as the "cool kid" of the Smiling Critters crew. He highly values this representation of himself, so he maintains his image through everything he does. This behavior appears in the cartoon's intro, where he is seen surfing, a sport generally considered to be cool. KickinChicken also has a strong sense of determination, as he will emerge unfazed from any tense situation that brings him to his knees. Despite this behavior, KickinChicken is prone to fear, as he cowered with the other six Smiling Critters (excluding CatNap) during a windy storm at DogDay's house. When CatNap agreed to use The Red Smoke to help them sleep, KickinChicken showed signs of euphoria when inhaling it, laughing hysterically with the others until they all passed out.
History[]
Backstory[]
KickinChicken was created as a member of the Smiling Critters toy line in 1989.[1] Presumably in 1990,[3] a Bigger Bodies version of KickinChicken was created to work in Playcare.[4] Sometime after The Hour of Joy, the Bigger Bodies version of KickenChicken was presumably killed by CatNap, as DogDay refers to himself as the “last” of the Smiling Critters.
Chapter 3: "Deep Sleep"[]
Entering the Playhouse, The Player would be chased by hostile KickinChicken plushies, along with the other Ruined Critters. Using the GrabPack 2.0's orange hand, The Player shoots flares at him to scare him away. (If KickinChicken gets too close, he jumpscares them by lunging at their face.) Later, several versions of him and the other plushies crawl inside DogDay's exposed torso wound, eat his insides, take control of him, and chase after The Player.
Trivia[]
- The scent of ylang-ylang has been documented to reduce anxiety, boost self-esteem, and help people relax.
- The self-esteem boost by ylang-ylang's scent compliments KickinChicken's personality and reputation as being the cool kid.
- KickinChicken was the fourth Smiling Critter to have his description revealed on Twitter.
- He is the only Smiling Critter who is not based on a mammal, but instead is based on a bird.
- He also is the only Smiling Critter to have his hands and feet be different colors, with his "hands" matching the color of his arms due to being wings.
- KickinChicken’s voice changes throughout the cartoon, but his official voice stays the same during Chapter 3.
- KickinChicken's house was a chicken coop in early concepts for the Smiling Critters cartoon.
- According to Amber, KickinChicken uses He/They pronouns.[5]
