| “ | Trouble getting along with others, aggressive and often confrontational social tendencies, and an otherwise combative nature clearly relay that Kevin is, put simply, a problem child. | ” |
| — Scientist #4, 1322 Report: Kevin | ||
Kevin Barnes was an orphan test subject who was chosen to be one of the components for Experiment 1322. He was first mentioned in the #1322 Report: Void tape, in which Scientist #4 explained that he had clear neural abnormalities and had to be pulled out of Home Sweet Home to perform an unspecified surgery, which in 1322 Report: Kevin, was revealed to be preparation for his usage as one of the three constituent parts of “Project: Doey.” He is also an antagonist as before the boss battle with Doey, he blames The Player for the destruction of Safe Haven and causes Doey to become violent and monstrous, ultimately starting his antagonistic phase.
Appearance[]
Kevin’s physical appearance is not shown in the games. Though he was likely to have possessed an athletic and possibly muscular body due to excelling in all physical tests at the Game Station.
Personality[]
Kevin was stated to have "Neural abnormalities" that made him a "problem child" by a scientist. Kevin exhibited behavioral issues demonstrated within Playcare, which included problems getting along with others, showing aggressive and confrontational tendencies, and a combative nature that even extended to the few friends he had, as he had attacked them with his temper tantrum in bouts of "intense play". However, they also stated that Kevin had excellent physical stats as he excelled in all physical tests in Game Station examinations.
History[]
Pre-Experiment[]
Kevin was an orphan who was known for his exceptional scores at the Game Station, and one day, he was taken out of Playcare for a check-up by Dr. Newman. In 1993, Kevin was once again taken out of Playcare so another scientist could detail his condition. But as he began, the subject’s friend, Joseph, walked in asking what was wrong with his friend. Feeling startled, the scientist lied that Kevin was severely ill and that they would make him better, but they could only do that by taking him to the right place. After making sure the boy was reassured, the scientist took him back to bed.[1]
After making sure he was in the clear, the scientist continued his check up of Kevin, who had been assigned Subject 1322B. He stated that the boy had previously been reported by another scientist to be a violent and angry character - not getting along well with others, acting aggressively and even attacking his own friends. However, due to his Game Station scores, Harley Sawyer believed he was an ideal test subject for Experiment 1322, so he was later fused into said experiment.[2]
As Doey[]
After getting fused into Doey, Kevin's characteristics are partly exhibited by him. Examples of him almost lashing out, losing his temper, talking with vengeance and anger when mentioning what Playtime Co. has done to them are portrayed in Doey. When Kevin's rage finally takes over after Safe Haven is blown up, he lashes out at The Player, pinning the blame on them and Poppy Playtime, and wanting to kill them. Before Doey's death, he lashes out again, saying he wants to kill everyone that inflicted harm on him, and that the "gentle voices" lie. These could refer to the scientists tricking Kevin during the process of making him into Doey, or anyone else who might have lied and betrayed his belief in them, shattering his trust and making him develop resentment towards the ones who had/might have ruined things for him. This is possibly a self-defense mechanism that Kevin developed to avoid being hurt further. At the end, when Doey dies, the other two boys apologize as Doey, except for him, who is still aggravated to the end.
Trivia[]
He shares the same name as the lead singer of the psych-R&B-funk-disco band of Montreal. However, this may just be a coincidence.
