| Gas Mask |
The Gas Mask is an item found within Chapter 3: Deep Sleep of Poppy Playtime.
This item is used in Playcare to protect The Player from CatNap's Red Smoke in the facility.
Appearance[]
The Gas Mask is an eerie red gas mask with large eye holes shadowed in black. It has two yellow blood-covered air filters, within both of which the Playtime Co. logo can be seen. It has a dark blue exhalation valve and has two straps attached to the back.
Gameplay[]
The mask makes its appearance in Chapter 3, acting as a minor gameplay mechanic. The mask is first discovered in Home Sweet Home after The Player experiences a hallucination due to walking into the Red Smoke. Following this, attempting to enter patches of Red Smoke without equipping the mask will result in The Player taking damage.
After The Player's mask is taken from them by CatNap, they locate a broken one within the Secondary Lab though this one is quickly stolen as well.
Theorizing[]
- It is presumed that the Gas Mask belonged to one of the scientists working at Playtime Co.
- This can further be proven as blood stains can be seen on the Gas Mask.
- It's possible that this Gas Mask belonged to one of the scientists in the Orphan Observing picture.
- The Gas Mask could also symbolically connect to Scientist #4 in the Final Log tape and the Log 08502 tape because he, unlike the other scientists, was very dedicated and obsessed with his work and the experiments. He also says in the Final Log tape that he doesn't care about himself.
- The Gas Mask can fall into the "Poppy Gas" theory, where gas formed from the infamous Poppy Flowers would spread across Playcare.
- The children crying and screaming in the background confirm that the toys are the orphans that Playtime Co. adopted.
- This has been partially confirmed as several Bigger Body toys are confirmed to be former children, although the identity of other toys like the Mini Huggies and the Mini Smiling Critters remains unknown.
- The Gas Mask may have been given the color scheme so that scientists wearing one of these masks wouldn't frighten the orphans.
- This implies the gas masks were constantly being worn by the scientists at Playcare, and that the children were slowly being exposed to Poppy Gas, which was probably more effective than the poppy gel mixture used in Experiment 814.[1]
Trivia[]
- During the 1900s, gas masks were painted red so that they would appear less frightening to children.
- Walt Disney also made gas masks that resembled Mickey Mouse to try to make them less scary.[2]
- In the Chapter 3 Official Game Trailer 1, the gas mask was seen in one of the bedrooms within Home Sweet Home, yet it is not found there in-game.
- The real life counterpart to this mask is an Avon CT12, a modified version of the FM12, and part of the S10 family of gas masks. These masks were in the mainstay respirator of the British forces between 1987 and 2012.
- During it's initial appearance in Chapter 3, the gas mask had a seemingly infinite clean air supply while in Chapter 4, it required air canisters for the user to breathe due to the Chapter 4 Gas Mask being a broken one.
