| Bruno White |
| “ | You've now seen tragic examples of men who let ego blind them to the Project's actual goals. Who let perceived personal gain overwhelm good sense. You will be better than this, Dr. White. | ” |
| — Eddie M. N. Ritterman to Bruno White, Secondary Lab Mission Statement | ||
Dr. Bruno White[5] is a recurring character in Poppy Playtime, debuting in Chapter 3: Deep Sleep. Bruno was a former member of the Young Geniuses Program[6] and was eventually hired at Playtime Co. due to the company being in need for scientists after the Smiling Critters disaster. He was also the former right hand man to Harley Sawyer until Dr. White turned him into an experiment under the orders of Leith Pierre.
Appearance[]
Bruno White's appearance is currently unknown.
Personality[]
Little is currently known about Bruno's full personality. He seemed easily cowed by people of authority as he transformed Harley Sawyer, his immediate superior, on the orders of Leith Pierre (someone who outranked Sawyer) as well as obey instructions and carry out procedures as directed without complaining. Like Harley Sawyer, Bruno also seemed to be apathetic to the suffering of the orphans based on his voice tone when taking a child for experimentation or talking to them before their procedure.
Bruno seemed to have no issue with making fun of someone he disagreed with, as he ironically set his computer subsystem password to "OneBadDay" due to Harley Sawyer's constant warnings of a single bad day causing a catastrophe, which his colleagues didn't agree with.
History[]
Backstory[]
In his youth, he was a member of the Young Geniuses Program alongside Harley Sawyer and many others. White produced an "impressive list of published papers".[6] Sometime after this, he was hired by Playtime Co. as a scientist and would work on various toy experiments. One of his jobs was to pick orphans from Playcare to be used in experiments. At one point, he picked Samuel Lee as the subject for an unspecified experiment.
Though not confirmed, most evidence points to Dr. White being the author of the "One Bad Day" Warning document. If so, it would mean that at some point, White struggled to take Harley Sawyer's words and cautions seriously, even making jokes about them. Bruno's password to his online central domain was "OneBadDay", further supporting this.
After the Theater Incident, Leith Pierre had Dr. White perform the procedure that would turn Dr. Sawyer into Experiment 1354. When Sawyer awoke now in his new body, White addressed him but Sawyer became infuriated before experiencing a headache which White responded that temporary disorientation was to be expected due to the recent procedure. As Sawyer demanded to know who gave the order for him to be experimented on, Leith stepped in to address him. Following this experiment, Eddie M. N. Ritterman promoted Dr. White to head of the Secondary Lab and tasked him with salvaging whatever resources he could from failed experiments, and extracting however much knowledge he needed from Sawyer, now in his experimental form.
Another experiment Dr. White worked on around this period was 1395, who was created using an orphan named Danny. On February 10, 1995, Riley wrote in her journal about 'being chosen' by Dr. White. During her procedure, she briefly woke up and saw a "man who looked like a doctor" taking organs out of her. The "doctor" in question was likely Dr. White.
Death[]
| “ | He always did have a certain drive, didn't he? But what good did it do for him? None. He is dead. | ” |

On August 8, 1995, Bruno White was killed in The Hour of Joy, alongside all of the other scientists. Even after his demise, Sawyer would continue holding a grudge against Bruno for what he did to him.[7] Sawyer thinks about Bruno a lot over the course of the Icepick ARG, even more than Leith Pierre, despite Leith being the one Sawyer hates the most.[8] He states that Bruno bad-mouthed him behind his back, meaning that he must've found out or already knew of Bruno's two-faced tendencies as he expresses his disappointment at Bruno by saying "I thought he understood my vision." This may hint that once upon a time, they were cordial enough with each other.
Trivia[]
- Harley Sawyer remarks that he had a bitter relationship with him, as a password Dr. White used to gain access to his Central Domain was a sarcastic jab at him.
- It is known that Bruno White died during The Hour of Joy, as in one of the questions sent to Harley Sawyer via an email address revealed in the Central Domain, he confirms his death was 7 years prior to the time of writing. The emails were canonically sent in 2002, 7 years after The Hour of Joy.
- Bruno White's first name was exclusively revealed in the Icepick ARG and hasn't been said anywhere else.
- Bruno White was played by Michael Kovach in Chapter 3: Deep Sleep. Kovach would deliberately base his performance on that of one of his other role, Scientist #4.
- Because of this, when it became clear to him that the character was not the same, he suggested that the part be recast for Chapter 4: Safe Haven. As a result, Sean Chiplock was cast in the role.[9]
- In the subtitles, Dr. White’s name appears in a brown font rather than the standard white used for other employees. This unusual stylistic choice may imply that there’s something distinct or significant about him.
- Alternatively, it could be an intentional visual pun, acting as a sort of oxymoron to his surname.
