Boxy Boo

Boxy starts as a simple music box that can transform in an instant to a terrifying enemy.

This Monster is a streamlined hunter with both speed and agility on his side. His springy limbs allow him to jump high and far to reach wherever he desires.

Boxy has several ways to surprise his prey. He can go into box form and hide amongst the scenery. His spring-arm allows him to grab survivors and pull them close before clawing them to death. On top of it all, his music will become louder and faster the closer he gets to his prey.

This cute but deadly creature is the horrific offshoot of several failed experiments. The first of his kind, he was based off of his toy counterpart. The original toy was created in 1966, and was later used as the base structure to create this monster.

ASSESSMENT: Do not engage.

Boxy Boo's Assessment description in Project: Playtime

Boxy Boo is a discontinued toy[1] once produced by Playtime Co. and a playable monster who originally debuted in Project: Playtime. He has since made cameo appearances in later installments of Poppy Playtime.

In 1990, Playtime Co. used Boxy's design as inspiration for Experiment 1160, the first successful experiment created from the Bigger Bodies Initiative. 1160 was known for his wily behavior and voracious appetite, which extended to human flesh thanks to The Doctor's adjustments. He was originally responsible for consuming troublesome employees aware of the Initiative; a position received following the successful elimination of his first victim: Rowan Stoll.[2]

By 1995, Boxy Boo had joined the Prototype's alliance and actively participated in The Hour of Joy, slaughtering many employees. Following the uprising, he heeded the Prototype's call, alongside Huggy Wuggy and Mommy Long Legs, and successfully combated the Resource Extraction Specialists sent by Leith Pierre to resume the Bigger Bodies Initiative.

Appearance[]

Boxy Boo is a vibrant, colorful jack-in-the-box toy. The main body is a light blue square box with golden shapes adorning each side: a star on the front, a heart on the back, and two side lids with a single circle each. There is also a wind-up crank just above the right-side lid. The arms pop out of the side lids, the legs pop out of the bottom of the box, and his head pops out of the top, which has a red lid with a yellow underside attached to the back edge.

His head is cubical, the fur on his hands, head and feet are red, and his eyes are big and dilated, just like Huggy Wuggy’s. He has claws on his feet and hands and has curved sharpened teeth. His limbs are made of dark red metallic springs, allowing them to stretch far out. His hands are unusually structured, possessing two fingers on either side and two more on top, and his feet are rectangular with three toe claws on each foot.

As a 2D cartoon render, he only has one visible tooth, but as confirmed on the construction render, he does indeed have a full set of teeth, including another fang on the other side of his mouth. He is also usually depicted with a tuft of hair on top of his head in the 2D art.

Personality[]

Though tucked into a box, its love can’t be contained. With springy limbs, little marble eyes, and a cubical head that splits open like a ring box, Boxy is every bit the cutie-pie children can fall in love with. But be warned, he might surprise you from time to time (don’t worry, that’s by design).
Official character bio.[3]

Boxy Boo as a toy character is portrayed as joyful and energetic, but somewhat clumsy as shown in his various cut-outs. He seems to hate being put on duties that require an abundance of physical effort, especially because he has to do them on his own, and he is easily worn out by them. In the Orientation Notebook, he is described as a troublemaker, hinting at a mischievous side of the character's playfulness.

But as a Bigger Bodies monster, he is gluttonous and violent, being able to eat people in one fell swoop, or even just mere segments of their bodies. While he hungers for food, he has some form of patience, being able to play the long game by hiding in his box and coming out to attack when people least expect it.

Story[]

Backstory[]

Boxy Boo was originally created in 1966, five years after Bron was created. While he was successful, he wasn't as popular as the other toys, ultimately being discontinued.[1] However, Playtime Co. found a new purpose for him. His box could be seen in the tape introducing the Bigger Bodies Initiative: the factory's infamous experimentation program with the goal of creating a workforce from giant toys to avoid lawsuits and have more efficient work done. Boxy Boo was the first successful Bigger Bodies Initiative monster to have been created. His purpose was to dispose of any lower-ended employees aware about the Initiative.

As the Experiment 1188 Bigger Bodies Proposal referred to Experiment 1160 as having enhanced mobility, a quality Boxy Boo is known for, fans were assuming that it could be him. This was finally confirmed by the Chapter 4 Icepick ARG where Experiment 1160 was described as the first successful creation in the Bigger Bodies Initiative.

Your gift has finally arrived.[]

After Boxy Boo was created, Harley Sawyer visited his containment cell. The angry hunter roared and played his music box as The Doctor revelled in his success, proclaiming the creature to be "the first of many" and his very existence opening many possibilities- some presumably leading to immortality. Harley then decided that the hunter's appetite must be attuned to human flesh. He asks a nearby doctor for an update on Rowan Stoll's situation.

Security 06

Rowan Stoll's Computer Database[]

After sending a recording to Leith Pierre regarding the rumours of "nanny cameras" being hidden within Huggy Wuggy's eyes, Rowan Stoll gained knowledge about Playtime Co.'s true ambitions and knew he would die at the hands of their experiments. Rowan wrote a letter to his mother after ending his third and final recording, then later walked downstairs towards the Theater's backstage, where he would be eaten alive by Boxy Boo.

RESTRICTED Restoration Bron Gets Jumped

RESTRICTED restoration.mp4[]

When Experiment 1199 was introduced to the other experiments, they acted hostile toward him. While 1199 was looking at PJ Pug-a-Pillar, Boxy faintly played his music box before grabbing and attacking 1199. He fled the scene when the security team entered the room to save 1199, though he had already caused significant damage to him.

Theater Incident[]

Boxy Boo was one of the toys responsible for murdering multiple Resource Extraction Specialists who went in to dispose of evidence from the Theater Incident.

The Hour of Joy[]

On August 8, 1995, all the experiments turned hostile under The Prototype's command and attacked all the employees within the factory. Boxy Boo's killing method was to eat employees alive, as seen in "The Hour of Joy" VHS tape.

Project Playtime[]

Following The Hour of Joy, specialists were sent in to retrieve toy parts so more giant toys could continue being made. Along with Huggy Wuggy and Mommy Long Legs, Boxy Boo killed any specialists that he could get his claws on.

Abilities[]

Passive Ability[]

Grab
Coils
Description With Boxy Boo's legs and arms being held by springy coils, Boxy can jab faster, jump higher, and fall slower.
Strategies

  • Boxy's passive ability allows for easier movement around maps, as most barriers can be jumped over with Boxy.
    • An effective example is on the Toy Factory map, where Boxy can jump over railings and blocked pathways allowing for easier movement.
  • Taking advantage of Boxy's quick jabs, you can quickly open lockers more efficiently, allowing for easier hunts for any additional Survivors.
  • Boxy's low gravity-type falling capabilities can allow for you to have more airtime, allowing you to glide in the air and quickly catch Survivors off-guard while they are solving any puzzles.
    • In a map like the Theater, where multiple entrances and exits can be found simply by falling back into the room from the roof, this ability is great for situations like these.

Movement Ability[]

Leap
Leap
Description Boxy Boo hides in his box, and after a player-dependent windup, Boxy Boo will leap and launch far depending on how the user performs the move.
Charge Up 2.75 Seconds
Strategies

  • Maps that have high ledges, like the Toy Factory's catwalks or the Theater's second floor can be reached with Boxy Boo's leap, allowing you to move quicker and easier.
    • Although Mommy Long Legs can do the same, it takes time to stretch all the way to said areas, while Boxy Boo can do so with a small windup.
  • Boxy Boo can shockingly launch forward, with the exception of a small fall after landing, allowing for passing long hallways and compact rooms to be ran through with ease, can be great for chasing Survivors.
  • When leaping, you can land on spots that Survivors normally can't reach, allowing for scouting an area being easier and can be used to temporarily hide while waiting for Puzzle Pillar errors.
    • Examples of areas that Boxy can reach multiple spread-out mechanisms seen within the Toy Factory.

Tactical Ability[]

Grab
Grab
Description Boxy Boo uses his spring hands to reach for any nearby player, pulling them to himself.
Cooldown 12 Seconds
Strategies

  • The Grabbing ability can be great while chasing other Survivors, allowing you to counter them running away and loosing sight.
    • It is best to use this ability when the Survivor is attempting to close a door or enter a small vent.
  • The ability shouldn't be used when the Survivor has a big lead on you alongside when a Survivor is about to make a turn, as the Grab can miss and will not move according to when the user turns.

Trivia[]

  • Surprisingly, Boxy Boo was teased way before Project: Playtime was announced on October 31, 2022.
    • In One year., a blue Jack-in-the-Box is seen below Huggy Wuggy's foot on the whiteboard.
    • On August 27, 2022, Mob Entertainment jokingly posted one scene where it is "revealed" that Sir Poops-A-Lot is secretly the Prototype. During this scene, a blue colourful Jack-in-a-Box can be seen in the background.
      • This model was actually a prototype version of Boxy Boo only featuring the box.
  • Mob Entertainment and their Minecraft animations may have played a role when they came up with the concept of Boxy's design.
    • During a livestream where they interacted with fans, Micah Preciado divulged that they initially had the concept of creating a character related to jump before the conception of Boxy. This began with the vision of Bunzo Bunny; however, it soon evolved into a kangaroo and ultimately became Boxy.[4]
  • Many people have theorized that Boxy Boo was created to punish Playtime Co. workers who found out about the experiments or tried leaking them to the public.
  • On January 22, 2024, it was announced that Boxy Boo will make his main game debut in Chapter 3. Before that, it was already confirmed by the developers that he is canon to the Poppy Playtime universe. However, this turned out to only be true in the form of the Hour of Joy.
    • It's speculated that Boxy Boo was the one who attacked Kissy Missy at the end of Chapter 3 as the screams heard sound identical to Boxy's and the fact that his abilities allow him to sneak up on others undetected. It's also possible that it could have been the Prototype or Yarnaby.
  • On day 9 of the 12 Days of Playtime posts, it was revealed that Boxy Boo was the first Bigger Body created. It was also mentioned that his motivation is hunger and that he’d eat literally anything.
