“ | Hi! I'm Bobby BearHug! Wanna know how much I love you? | ” |
— Bobby BearHug |
Bobby BearHug is a toy produced by Playtime Co. who debuted in Chapter 3: "Deep Sleep". Hostile plushies of her reside in Playcare with the rest of the Smiling Critters line-up. Two security statues of her also appear in Home Sweet Home (one broken, one active) for which The Player must get a battery from.
Experiment 1186, her Bigger Bodies experiment title, experienced a failed procedure that initially rendered her with sensory and mobility issues.[3]
Appearance[]
Bobby BearHug is an anthropomorphic bear with red fur, black eyes, a black nose, rounded ears, and padded paws. Her paws, upper snout, and belly are rose pink, similar to the inside of her ears. In line with other Smiling Critters, Bobby BearHug sports a perpetual wide toothless grin, her inner mouth shrouded in mysterious darkness, and she possesses a distinctive black zipper tracing down her center, with the zipper sporting a ruby-colored heart pendant.
Bobby BearHug's cartoon appearance is roughly the same as her toy appearance, albeit with her zipper line removed, the addition of white pupils, and the zipper pendant now attached to a black necklace.
Bobby's Bigger Bodies form is very similar to CatNap's. Her ribs are showing and she has a slight dent on the top of her head. Her feet have no fur, have four toes, and have one claw on each toe. Her hands look very similar to her feet. She has a zipper going down her stomach, which sports a heart charm. She appears to have no pupils. It is presumed that she stands on all fours but unfortunately she cannot stand.
Personality[]
“ | A kind, caring soul, Bobby BearHug shows compassion for everyone, and for everything. People and places and things, large or small, are all receivers of her love. Each is enriched by this attention and affection, and in turn, so is she. | ” |
— Bobby BearHug's character description[4] |
According to her character description, Bobby BearHug possesses warm and appreciative qualities, similar to how Huggy Wuggy was designed. She cares deeply about her friends and everything around her, and will presumably act as a peacemaker, sharing the same role with CraftyCorn, if a fight breaks out amidst the crew. However, Bobby can also be seen as naive, as she may care about someone who doesn't have her best intentions at heart. According to her cardboard cutout, she fears being abandoned, asking The Player if they are going to leave her.
Like the other Smiling Critters, Bobby BearHug showcased an unnerving and maniacal personality when CatNap came to DogDay's house during their sleepover. When CatNap helped them fall asleep via The Red Smoke, Bobby showed signs of euphoria when inhaling the sleeping agent, laughing gleefully with the others until she passed out.
History[]
Backstory[]
Bobby BearHug was created as a member of the Smiling Critters toy line in 1989.[1] At some point, two statues of her that rotate when movement is detected were installed in Home Sweet Home, presumably to keep watch over the kids.
The Bigger Bodies Initiative version of Bobby BearHug, dubbed Experiment 1186, was created in 1990[2] to interact with the children in Playcare.[5] However, there were issues in the process of her creation. Bobby showed a lack of awareness of her surroundings and did not respond to audio stimuli, indicating a distortion or total lack of sensory function. Bobby also could not speak, despite being able to move her mouth, and she could not keep her balance when she stood up. It was indicated that she would need to return to surgery to fix these issues.[3]
Sometime after The Hour of Joy, Bobby BearHug was presumably killed (possibly by CatNap), as DogDay refers to himself as the "last" of the Smiling Critters.
Chapter 3: "Deep Sleep"[]
In Home Sweet Home, The Player found one of the batteries they needed in the first, fallen-over Bobby BearHug statue. In the second, still-operating statue, The Player either snuck up behind her by crouching, grabbing the battery from a distance, or running in circles around her eventually glitching the code to obtain the battery.
In the Playhouse, The Player found hostile Bobby BearHug plushies with the rest of the Ruined Critters, who chased The Player. Using the GrabPack 2.0's orange hand, The Player shot flares at her to scare her away. (If Bobby BearHug got too close, she jumpscared them by lunging at their face.) Later, several versions of her crawled inside DogDay's exposed torso while one crawled into one of his eyes to control him and chase after The Player.
Trivia[]
- Bobby BearHug was the second Smiling Critter to have her description revealed on Twitter.
- In early concepts for the cartoon, Bobby BearHug's house was the design of a beehive. This is a reference to cartoon bears like Winnie the Pooh always eating honey.
- In the Chapter 3 Interactable ARG, Bobby BearHug makes a cameo in the Playhouse CCTV camera feed. After an allotted amount of time, a Ruined Critter version of her is seen running on all fours down the hallway of the prisons and turning left.
- The scent of rose is a floral symbol of love and passion, but it is also known for its soothing and relaxing properties used traditionally in aromatherapy.
- Rose's symbolism compliments Bobby BearHug's personality, being a warm and lovable character among the Smiling Critters.
- Bobby BearHug’s last name is a reference to a bear hug, which is when a person hugs another from behind.
- Bobby BearHug is the only Smiling Critter with lighter-colored hands and feet compared to the others, who have darker-colored appendages.
- Bobby BearHug's caring and loving personality could be derivative of both Tenderheart Bear as well as Love-a-Lot Bear, both from Care Bears, as all three of them are bears and have symbols with something to do with hearts.
- According to Amber, Bobby BearHug uses She/They pronouns.[6]
- The Orientation Notebook reveals that Bobby BearHug's experiment number is 1186. The report implied that the connections for her ears to transmit sounds to her brain and her ability to speak were both incorrectly wired, as she appeared to be both deaf and mute. An included sketch of 1186 resembles Experiment 1188, with an emaciated body and clawed paws as opposed to DogDay's humanoid hands.
