Baba Chops |
“ | You’ve already met Baba Chops, our bundle of teenage angst. If you look up ‘loner’ in the dictionary, her picture is slapped right there next to it. | ” |
— Baba Chops' twitter intro |
Baba Chops[1] is a toy produced by Playtime Co. and a member of the Nightmare Critters, a group of eight characters who presumably serve as the antithesis of the Smiling Critters. She is set to be featured in Chapter 4 as an secondary antagonist.
Appearance[]
Baba Chops is an anthropomorphic sheep, characterized by black wool that complements her cotton tail and the expressive black eyes associated with her toy line. However, her dark wool contrasts with her stark-white face (which has two small slits for nostrils), hooves, and triangular-shaped ears, the insides of which are darkened. Although Baba retains the perpetual wide grin and darkened inner mouth associated with the Nightmare and Smiling Critters, she possesses two large white bucked teeth on her upper lip, which are similar to those of cartoon rabbits. A distinct black zipper traces down her center, showcasing a bloody silver human skull pendant.
Personality[]
“ | The "black sheep" of the bunch, Baba prefers to keep her space. Like, a LOT of space. TOO MUCH space. She can be distant, quiet, low-energy, and it usually requires a LOT of coaxing to get her out of the house. Luckily for her, she has some VERY persistent friends. She usually perks up after a while, but the next day, we're right back to the same tune. | ” |
— Baba Chops's character description. |
According to her character description, Baba Chops displays several characteristics of an angsty teenager. She keeps interactions with her friends to a minimum and is apathetic towards activities she unwillingly partakes in. She is also quite reclusive, spending most of her time in her house. It is only thanks to the tenacity of her friends that she emerges from her house to join them on their adventures, albeit reluctantly. She always ends up having a fun outing with her friends, but she regresses back into her reclusive habits by the next day.
Judging by the Chapter 4 Teaser Trailer, Baba Chops is an efficient and ruthless hunter, having killed and collected hundreds of small toys. Given this large surplus of food, it appears she now kills for sport rather than a need for sustenance. Instead of searching for prey, she utilizes her collected corpses as a deadly lure, one meant for any toy who dares enter her domain.
She is also cunning in nature, using her darker color scheme (compared to her vibrant brethren) to blend into the darkened factory environment, hiding in plain sight. Her camouflage tactic allows her to stay close to her soon-to-be prey, who would be unable to detect her presence until it's too late.
Trivia[]
- The animal choice for the character was thought to be based off YouTuber Sheeprampage.[2]
- The animal choice could also be based on the term "black sheep," which describes a person who deviates from norms and standards of a family or community.
- Sheeprampage, however, confirmed that it wasn’t true.[3]
- Her name might be based on the song "Baa, Baa Black Sheep".
- However, it may also be based on Baba Yaga, an old woman from Slavic folklore who eats children.[4]
- Her other part of her name “Chops” is a reference to lamb or mutton chops.
- Chops could also be a reference to the puppet on the old TV-Show “Lamb Chop’s Play Along.
- However, it may also be based on Baba Yaga, an old woman from Slavic folklore who eats children.[4]
- Her pendant, a skull, is universally seen as a symbol of death, and may be tied to her psychopathic and murderous nature, as seen in the Chapter 4 Teaser Trailer.
- It was theorized that her personality trait would refer to drama and acting, paying homage to the infamous skull in William Shakespeare's Hamlet.
- According to folklore, anise was believed to stave off nightmares when placed nearby a bed.
- She was confirmed to not be the main antagonist of Chapter 4.[5]
- She was also confirmed to be the placeholder on the Chapter 4 Steam cover.
- At first it was heavily theorized that her name would be "Baba Chops" due to Mob Entertainment's recent trademarks.[6][7]
- This was later confirmed by Mob themselves from an X (formerly known as Twitter) post.[8]
- Contrasting the rest of the Ruined Critters, all of whom are visibly damaged in some way (loose stuffing, ripped fabric, missing eyes, etc.), Baba appears to be largely intact.
- This could imply that she was created quite recently, possibly by the Prototype itself.
- However, this can be refuted as in the same teaser a Mini DogDay appears completely intact showing that not all Mini Critters are ruined.
- She is the first of the listed "Nightmare Critters".
- Baba Chops, Rabie Baby, Allister Gator, Simon Smoke, Touille and Maggie Mako are the only Nightmare Critters to have visible teeth.
- Baba Chops, Allister Gator, Touille, and Maggie Mako are the only critters who display a specific type of bone in their pendants. In Baba Chops’s case, her pendant is a skull.
- Her personality may be inspired by those of shut-ins.
- She is the only Nightmare Critter who doesn’t display furrowed eyes. This is due to most of her eyes being covered by her wool.
- Baba Chops, Rabie Baby, and Touille are the only Nightmare Critters to be mammals.
- In a Halloween promotional image posted by Mob Entertainment's Twitter account, fans have pointed out that Baba is wearing a costume of Sans from the video game Undertale.[Citation needed]
