| Baba Chops |
| “ | You've already met Baba Chops, our bundle of teenage angst. If you look up ‘loner’ in the dictionary, her picture is slapped right there next to it. | ” |
| — Baba Chops' Twitter intro | ||
Baba Chops is an experiment produced by Playtime Co. and a member of the Nightmare Critters, a group of eight characters who presumably serve as the antithesis of the Smiling Critters. She appears in Chapter 4: Safe Haven as a minor antagonist in the form of small hostile plush toys. A larger version of Baba appears also as a secondary antagonist.
Appearance[]
Baba Chops is an anthropomorphic sheep, characterized by black wool that complements her cotton tail and the expressive black eyes associated with her toy line. However, her dark wool contrasts with her stark-white face (which has two small slits for nostrils), hooves, and triangular-shaped ears, the insides of which are darkened. Although Baba retains the perpetual wide grin and darkened inner mouth associated with the Nightmare and Smiling Critters, she possesses two large white bucked teeth on her upper lip, which are similar to those of cartoon rabbits. A distinct black zipper traces down her center, showcasing a luminous silver human skull pendant. Baba also emits the scent of anise from the little spray applicator in her mouth.
Personality[]
| “ | The "black sheep" of the bunch, Baba prefers to keep her space. Like, a LOT of space. TOO MUCH space. She can be distant, quiet, low-energy, and it usually requires a LOT of coaxing to get her out of the house. Luckily for her, she has some VERY persistent friends. She usually perks up after a while, but the next day, we're right back to the same tune. | ” |

According to her character description, Baba Chops displays several characteristics of an angsty teenager. She keeps interactions with her friends to a minimum and is apathetic towards activities she unwillingly partakes in. She is also quite reclusive, spending most of her time in her house. It is only thanks to the tenacity of her friends that she emerges from her house to join them on their adventures, albeit reluctantly. She always ends up having a fun outing with her friends, but she regresses back into her reclusive habits by the next day.
She is also cunning in nature, using her darker color scheme (compared to her vibrant brethren) to blend into the darkened factory environment, hiding in plain sight. Her camouflage tactic allows her to stay close to her soon-to-be prey, who would be unable to detect her presence until it's too late.
History[]
Chapter 4: Safe Haven[]
Inside the Prison, on The Doctor's orders, as well as other Nightmare Critters, several Baba Chops plush toys appear to attack The Player, who tries to repel them using the Flare Hand. After a certain amount of time in which The Player is tested by The Doctor, he orders a ceasefire, causing the Baba Chops plush toys, as well as the Nightmare Critters and Mini Huggies, to retreat to their respective places.
When The Player falls inside the Holding Area, with other Nightmare Critters experiments trapped in their cages, Sawyer sends a big Baba Chops to chase them and eat them alive. While The Player tries to find the Batteries to restore power and leave the location, Baba makes bleating noises and screams as he try to kill The Player, until they generates enough power to the door to open it and successfully escape her into a room with a capsule device containing a Simon Smoke plush.
As The Player walks through the Foundation cave to collect explosives, several Baba Chops plush toys as well as other Nightmare Critters plush toys, and Mini Huggies reappear to attack them as they advances, forcing them to defend themself and counterattack using the Flare Hand.
Trivia[]
- The animal choice for the character was thought to be based off YouTuber Sheeprampage.[6]
- The animal choice could also be based on the term "black sheep", which describes a person who deviates from norms and standards of a family or community.
- Sheeprampage, however, confirmed that it wasn’t true.[7]
- Her name might be based on the song "Baa, Baa Black Sheep".
- However, it may also be based on Baba Yaga, an old woman from Slavic folklore who eats children.[8]
- Her other part of her name “Chops” is a reference to lamb or mutton chops.
- Chops could also be a reference to the puppet on the old TV-Show “Lamb Chop’s Play Along".
- However, it may also be based on Baba Yaga, an old woman from Slavic folklore who eats children.[8]
- Her pendant, a skull, is universally seen as a symbol of death, and may be tied to her violent and murderous nature, as seen in the Chapter 4 Teaser Trailer.
- It was theorized that her personality trait would refer to drama and acting, paying homage to the infamous skull in William Shakespeare's Hamlet.
- According to folklore, anise (which is also Baba Chops' scent) was believed to stave off nightmares when placed on a nearby bed.
- She was confirmed to not be the main antagonist of Chapter 4.[9]
- She was also confirmed to be the placeholder on the Chapter 4 Steam cover.
- At first it was heavily theorized that her name would be "Baba Chops" due to Mob Entertainment's recent trademarks.[10][11]
- This was later confirmed by Mob themselves from an X (formerly known as Twitter) post.[12]
- Contrasting the rest of the Ruined Critters, all of whom are visibly damaged in some way (loose stuffing, ripped fabric, missing eyes, etc.), Baba appears to be largely intact.
- She is the first of the listed "Nightmare Critters".
- Baba Chops, Rabie Baby, Allister Gator, Simon Smoke, Touille, and Maggie Mako are the only Nightmare Critters to have visible teeth.
- Her personality, like Poe's, is based on Goth subculture archetypes, though a more introverted and grounded version compared to Poe's theatrical and cartoonish take.
- She is the only Nightmare Critter who doesn’t display furrowed eyes. This is due to most of her eyes being covered by her wool.
- Her toy does appear to have furrowed eyes, however.
- The merch of the Baba Chops Black Tee on the official Poppy Playtime store website shows her furrowed eyes.
- Baba Chops, Rabie Baby, and Touille are the only Nightmare Critters to be mammals.
- In a Halloween promotional image posted by Mob Entertainment's Twitter account, fans have pointed out that Baba is wearing a costume of Sans from the video game Undertale.[13]
- Baba Chops is the only one of the Nightmare Critters with hooves, with the others having fingers, wings, and claws.
- Despite being called a "black sheep," both figuratively and literally, she's a white sheep with black wool, and not a black sheep with black wool.
- Oddly, during the Large Baba's boss fight, Harley Sawyer refers to the toy with masculine pronouns, despite the original character being female. It's unclear if this means that the child made for this Baba is male, or if the line is an error in some way, whether due to a misreading or being leftover from a different character being in their place, namely Yarnaby or Pianosaurus.
- In the power redirection room, a mini Baba Chops can be seen trying to bite through the cage she is in.
- In the first banner of Chapter 4: Safe Haven, a different version of Baba Chops appears, a plush version but with small, shiny pupils. The closest thing to this version in the game is the Giant Plush Baba Chops.
